Yannis Haralambous

Yannis Haralambous (in Greek Γιάννης Χαραλάμπους , born in 1962 with Athens) is a Informaticien specialized in the study of the data-processing text, the numerical Typographie, internationalization. He is the author of the work Fontes & codings , published at O' Reilly France in 2004 and at O' Reilly US in 2007 (under the title Fonts & Encodings ). With Tereza Tranaka, it founded in 1994 the Atelier Fluxus Virus , a specialized company in the composition and my page layout of works using of the not-Latin writings. Since 2001, it teaches data processing with ENST Brittany, with Brest.

Biography

Yannis Haralambous was born in Athens in 1962. His/her father, Athanassios-Diomidis Haralambous (Ἀθανάσιος-Διομήδης Χαραλάμπους) was geologist, doctor of the university of Bonn and author of famous a Bibliographie of the geological and geographical works on Greece , in three volumes. His/her mother Cécile Haralambous born Rysmanowski (Καικιλία Χαραλάμπους τὸ γένος Ρυσμανόφσκι) made studies of geography and theology before s" to install in Greece in 1959. Yannis Haralambous made its primary studies (1966-1973) at the school Agios Paulos (Ἅγιος Παῦλος) and then its secondary studies (1973-1979) with the Leonine College of Patissia (Λέοντειον Λύκειον Πατησίων). During this time it followed courses of piano by Tonis Georgiou (Τώνης Γεωργίου), a pupil of Emil von Sauer, with the Conservatoire national of Athens (Ἐθνικὸν Ὡδεῖον, Ἀθήνα).

It arrives to France, in Lille, on August 20th, 1979. Between 1979 and 1986 it makes studies of mathematics to the Université of Sciences and Techniques of Lille-Flandres-Artois (DEUG has, License, Maîtrise of pure Mathematics, DEA of Mathematics). Between 1986 and 1990 it prepares a thesis in pure Mathematics, under the direction of Daniel Tanré, entitled moderate Homotopie of CW-complex of finished size . It supports its thesis on July 4th, 1990.

By preparing its thesis he learns the language TeX and comes into contact with the TeX community of the United States and then that of Germany and France. Begin long series of articles in reviews around the numerical typography, of participation in conferences in the whole world, and then of organization of conferences in Japan, in Israel, in France. It develops typographical systems for the Gothic scripts, the Koranic Arabic, biblical Hebrew, the Armenian, the Kampuchean one, cingalais it, Mongolian, and other writings. During one year he teaches, as ATER, with INALCO.

In 1994, it founds with his partner Tereza Tranaka (conceptual artist, graduate DNSEP of the higher regional School of plastic expression of Tourcoing), the Atelier Fluxus Virus a specialized company in the composition/page layout of works using of the not-Latin writings. They marry in 1995, their oldest daughter Ernestine Chloé Helene is born in April 1998.

After six months with Tsukuba (Japan) near the development team of the software MULE (“Multilingual Emacs”), in 2001, Yannis Haralambous joined the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of telecommunications of Brittany, in Brest, as a teacher-researcher at the Informatique department. In 2003 it organizes XIVe EuroTeX conference there.

Its work “Pig iron and cast iron & codings” is published by the editions O' Reilly in April 2004. In the years 2005-2007 this work is translated into English by Scott Horne and appears in version into English, in September 2007 with the editions O' Reilly US, under the title “Font & Encodings”. It is about the first and single work O' Reilly in English language, which either translated starting from a foreign language.

In October 2004 is born his/her daughter junior Danaé Elsa Catherine 英子, whose fourth first name is Japanese, decides “éiko” and is inspired by the Japanese singer Eiko Matsumoto 松本英子.

Since 2004 he is also member of the jury of the DSAA mention prints École Estienne.
