Yangzhou

Yangzhou (扬州; Pinyin: Yángzhōu) is a city of the center of the province of the Jiangsu in China. It is on the Yangzi Jiang. Its population was approximately 4,5 million inhabitants in 2003.

Located at approximately 70  km of Nankin, it was formerly an important crossroads for the salt trade because it is directly on the channel of the Emperor; it had thus become with the Middle Ages a prosperous and powerful commercial city. Marco Polo, says one, spent there several years as governor on behalf of the sovereigns of the dynasty of the Yuan. The creation of the railway lines in China made him lose its role in the exchanges.

Today, Yangzhou is known at the national level for its three gardens: Shouxihu Gongyuan, Ge Yuan and He Yuan. These gardens are organized in the traditional style of the time Tang. The fashion is then with the gardens landscapes with conceptual allusion and it is by taking again these bases that the landscape designers Ming and Qing built the theories sophists on art to create the gardens. These gardens even attract a great number of visitors of China.

Out of China, Yangzhou has many amateurs to the Japan because the first to have brought the Bouddhisme to Japan is a monk of Daming If, a cloister not far from the limits of the city. The Japanese influence is noticed in three large Pagode S, gift of Japan, which is a reflection of the style of the Japanese pagodas.

X {{E}} with the XIV {{E}} centuries, the city was a cultural hearth and number of poets and important artists of this time there worked and lived. One knows the school of painting of the Eight Eccentrics which one can see works in the museum of Yangzhou.
