Yan Dargent
Yan Dargent is a painter and illustrator French of which the major part of pictorial work is devoted to its native area, the Brittany. It was born with Saint-Were useful (department of the Finistere) the October 15th 1824, it died in Paris the November 19th 1899.
Biography
Youths
Jean-Edouard says Yan Dargent was born in 1824, it is the son of Wrapped Clementine and Claude Dargent, a family of tanners. He is only two years old when his/her mother dies, his father moves with Landerneau where he does not delay with remarier, the child is raised by his grandparents. He is provided education for with Saint-Pol.-of-Leon before joining his father with Landerneau. One of his/her friends of childhood is the poet and folklorist François-Marie Luzel.At 16 years, in 1840, it enters to the Company of the West which must build the railway line between Morlaix and Brest, it is charged to make land surveys. Its gifts for the drawing make it climb the levels of the hierarchy and occupies the post of engineer. He becomes acquainted with a professor of drawing with Troyes, Mr. Schitz, who commits it to develop his talents. Considered as autodidact, it forever belonged to a “School” like Sérusier and so much of others, which could harm its career.
The painter and the illustrator
In 1850, it is had a presentiment of by the Company of the West for the realization of a building site in Spain, it prefers to give its resignation and to try to live of its painting while moving with Paris. This same year, his/her partner Aimée Crignou gives rise to a son, Ernest. During the Years 1850, it continues its artistic production and exposes every year to the Salon of Paris, without its talent being recognized.It should await 1861 so that Théophile Gautier appreciates the Lavender fields of the night (today with the museum of the fine arts of Quimper) and makes an eulogistic paper of it. Its fame is made. Parallel to its career of painter, he devotes himself, like his friend Gustave Doré, with the illustration of books (on the whole approximately 200), which gets a remuneration more regular to him than the sale of fabrics. He also works for reviews such the Museum of the families or illustrated France .
He lives in Paris and also in Brittany, close to Saint-Pol.-of-Leon, where he arranges his workshop. The July 3rd 1867, it marries a musician Eugenie Mathieu who dies quickly. Of 1869 with 1878, requested by the clergy, it is devoted to the decoration of several churches in Brittany: Saint-Was useful, Landerneau, Morlaix, Ploudalmézeau and especially the Cathédrale Saint-Corentin of Quimper from which it carries out the ornamentation of all the side chapels.
Its work is unequal, it knows one period Pompier judged bad taste but it also realized, apart from the Lavandières of the night , its most famous work, of superb paintings like Small the roscovite , which is exposed with the town hall Saint pol. of Leon. It also painted splendid sunsets on the grèvres of Roscoff, as well as beautiful tables on the landscapes of the Leon (northern Finistere).
He dies on November 19th, 1899 in Paris. A museum is devoted to him in its birthplace of Saint-Were useful.
There are a few years all the frescos of the cathedral of Quimper, carried out by Yan Dargent were restored. That allowed this painter forgotten to leave anonymity. A coed of the University of Brest, devoted her thesis to him.
