The Yamashiro-den (山城伝) indicates one of the five traditions of Japanese forging mill for the Koto period (fine of the era Heian at beginning Momoyama). This tradition gathers various considered schools, to which the styles and techniques are often close.

School Aoe (青江)

KB-Aoe: End Heian - Kamakura Medium

  • Characteristic general:
- Sugata : the form of the tachi follows the general fashion. Curve is strong a koshi-zori .
- Jihada : chirimen-hada is a speciality. One can sometimes find sumigane (steel with black appearance). In the same way, one finds hamon in mokume-hada with ji-denies and of the chikei . When the style is a mixture of the traditions Bizen and Yamshiro, the jihada is an end mokume-hada with o-hada , and some chikei or utsuri .
- Hamon : the line of hardening is typical Yamashiro tradition but with more nioi according to the tradition of Bizen. The form is midare based on suguha with ashi and yo . One finds hamon in chu-suguha with much of activity ( denies , kinsuji , inazuma ).
- Bôshi : midari kome or suguha with a short kaeri .
  • Blacksmiths: Yasutsugu (安次), Moritsugu (守次), Sadatsugu (貞次), Tsunetsugu (恒次), Tsuguie (次家), Noritaka (則高), Masamune (正恒), Tsuneto (常遠), Morito (守遠)

Chu-Aoe: Kamakura medium - End Nambokuchô

  • Characteristic general:
- Sugata : the forms are typical time. Many blades were shortened later, and were transformed into nagamaki naoshi . The tantô have mainly two forms: the form standart with uchi-zori and the KB-wakizashi with saki-zori and hira-zukuri .
- Jihada : end mokume-hada with o-hada . One finds also some utsuri and sumigane .
- Hamon : the lines of hardening are identical to the school KB-Aoe with a mixture of Yamashiro and Bizen. One finds saga choji midare , suguha with saka ashi and saka ashi .
- Bôshi : Aoe-bôshi , the point is tilted towards the mune .
  • Blacksmiths: Chikatsugu (親次), Hidetsugu (秀次), Yoshitsugu (吉次), Naotsugu (直次), Tsuguyoshi (次吉), Tsugunao (次直), Moritsugu (守次), Ietsugu (家次), Tamenori (為則), Kunitsugu (国次), Tsunetsugu (恒次), Nagatsugu (長次), Shigetsugu (重次).

Known-Aoe: Muromachi

  • Characteristic general: school activates during the Nambokuchô era, but of less good quality that the preceding schools. In general, the jigane is hard.

- Hamon : suguha , gunomist midare or koshi-No-hiraita midare . One finds also the activity yaki kuzure .

School Ayanokoji (綾小路)

Founder: Sadatoshi (定利). Province of Ayanokoji.
  • Characteristic general:
  • : - Sugata : the tachi are thin with a KB-kissaki
  • : - Jihada : KB-mokume-hada combined with masame-hada , much of ji-denies , of chikei and yubashiri
  • : - Hamon : KB-choji midare with much of activity ( kinsuji and inazuma )
  • : - Bôshi : KB-maru , denies-kuzure , kaen and yakitsume
  • Forgerons: Sadatoshi (定利), Sadayoshi (定古), Nagamasa (永昌)

School Awataguchi (粟田口)

Founder: Kuniie (国家). School gathering of excellent blacksmiths located at Awataguchi.
  • Characteristic general:
  • : - Sugata : style very close to the style of the Sanjo school.
  • : - Jihada : nashiji-hada of very good quality. Mokume-hada with chikei and sometimes of the yubashiri
  • : - Suguha-hotsure , suguha combined with cho-choji midare . Much activity as denies , kinsuji and inazuma
  • : - Bôshi : KB-maru and o-maru , short kaeri with sometimes of the activity.
  • Blacksmiths: Kuniyori (国頼), Kuniie (国家), Kunitomo (国友), Hisakuni (久国), Kuniyasu (国安), Kunikiyo (国清), Arikuni (有国), Kunitsuna (国綱), Kuniyoshi (国吉), Kunimitsu (国光)

School Enju (延寿)

Founder: Kunimura (国村) wire of Hiromura (弘村)

School KB-Enju

  • Characteristic general:
- Jihada : end KB-mokume hada with masame hada and chikei
- Hamon : chu-suguha combined with hotsure , KB-midare and kko-choji midare . Presence of activity: ashi , kinsuji and inazuma .
- Bôshi : KB-maru with much of denies
  • Forgerons: Kuniyasu (国泰), Kunisuke (国資), Kunitoki (国時), Kunitomo (国友)

Chu-Enju school

  • Characteristic general:
- Sugata : style following the fashion of the period, but one finds sometimes a o-kissaki
- Jihada : identical to the school KB-Enju
- Hamon : near to the style of Spoke Kunitoshi but with less and of activity denies.
- Bôshi : KB-maru and KB-midare
  • Blacksmiths: Kuniyoshi (国吉), Kunikiyo (国清), Kunitsuna (国綱), Kunifusa (国房), Kunishige (国重)

Known-Enju school

  • Characteristic general: have the characteristics of the Yamato tradition.

Founder: Kuniyoshi (国吉). Activate starting from the Kamakura medium. Particularly representative of the tradition Yamashiro
