Yak

The yak , or yak ( Boss grunniens ), is large a Espèce of Ruminant of the high plateaus of the north of the Tibet. The female of the yak is the dri or NAK .

General information

He lives with the Tibet, with the Nepal and with the Bhutan until more than 6000 meters of altitude, has a long fleece, whose domestic variety is used as animal bldg. He also lives in the north of the China, with the Gansu and in Mongolia. A stockbreeder constituted a livestock of yaks in Suisse. The yak is a herbivore and has one lifespan which can go up to 20 years. In the Himalayas, its Bouse S is used to make fire.

In Mongolia, the yak is also used for its milk (in natural or fermented form), its meat and its fleece. It is frequently crossed there with cows.

The two orthographies are widespread in French and as correct one as the other. Only the etymology and the seniority (1791) of yak (of the Tibetan gyak via English yak , according to the TLFi) make it possible to have a light preference for the first. But the second orthography seems to be employed, in a current but discontinuous way, as of 1808.

Wild yaks (subspecies B.G. mutus ) can weigh until a ton. They usually live in groups of 10 to 30 individuals. Their habitat is composed of dismantled top-plates, hills and mountains at altitudes ranging between 3.200 and 5.400 meters. They nourish grass, of Lichen S and other types of plants. During the hot season, these animals live in the areas close to the eternal snow; then go down towards grounds to the more lenient climate when the cold season approaches. The yaks can as well face the cold thanks to their very dense undercoat as by their length and thick peeling of surface.
