Yab-yum

Yab-Yum is a Tibetan term which wants to say: " father-mère".

Significance

Yab-yum is a couple of divinities of the Tantrisme Tibetan usually present in Buddhism Vajrayana. They are generally represented in Position union of the lotus symbolizing the non-duelle overlap of the two principles masculine (representing the compassion, skilful means or method) and female (repésentant the wisdom, the vacuity).

The Yabyum term is used besides as synonymy of the Union position of the lotus. However, for the Tibetans there is in Yab-Yum absolutely no sexual or erotic suggestion: these figures are an expression symbolic system of a major spiritual truth, the truth of the inseparable union of the love and wisdom. This symbolism thus relates to more the high level of spiritual experiment, the level of the Awakening, the level where, finally, the love and wisdom are completely integrated.

Origin

Yab-yum Tibetan comes from India. The concept yab-yum in Buddhist optics is distinct from that presented in the Hindouisme. Even if one can find a certain similarity in the Iconographie, the Buddhist sight in this approach yab yum is specific and disctincte approach tantric hindouist. The identification with an aspect yab yum aims, like support of Méditation, primarily to release themselves from the suffering and to develop the potential of specific awakening to each being. If there exist certain loans with the tantrism hindouist, where one retouve also these intertwined divinities, the goddess represented being then Shakti and its during masculine Shiva, it is necessary to keep of any amalgam with regard to the sight which soutend his practices.
