Xuzhou

Xuzhou (徐州; Pinyin: Xúzhōu) is a city of the North-East of the province of the Jiangsu in China. Its population was of: 1729600 inhabitants in 2004.

It is a commune where the four provinces meet: those of the Jiangsu, the Shandong, the Henan and the Anhui.

This particular geographical position confers a strategic point known to him in the Chinese history.

Moreover, this city has economic and cultural characters belonging at the same time to the north and the south of China. It is a well served city having an important diversity of manufactured goods.

One speaks the dialect there about Xuzhou of the Mandarin Zhongyuan.

History

With more than 6000 years of history, Xuzhou, formerly called Pengcheng or " town of Peng" , is the oldest provincial town of Jiangsu.

It was one of the nine states under the reign of the emperor Yu of the Dynastie Xia. At this time Xuzhou was the name of a vast area which extended from the mount Taishan in north to the Huaihe river in the south and the river Huanghe in the east and in which Pengcheng was the central city. Xuzhou took this name in high antiquity. Xuzhou became " dao" (province), " fu" (prefecture), " zhou" (department).

In XVe and XVIe century, many boats stopped there at each year whereas the city was an important wearing of river. However, in the year 1604 whereas the large channel was closed, Xuzhou started to decline. It regained importance that at the beginning of the XXe century when the railroads arrived in the city.

More recently it was the center of an important battle between Japanese and the Chinese during the month of May 1938. Then during the civil war (1945-1949), its surroundings were the place of an important confrontation between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist party.

In 602 before J-C, under the Ding emperor (of Dynasite of Zhou), a first rupture of the dams take place and the River Huanghe moved towards the south causing the flood of Xuzhou. Since, under the Dynasties of Han, of Wei, Tang and Song, although the principal river of the River Huanghe is thrown in the sea Bohai, in the center of the Hebei, the catastrophes in the central plain have affected several Xuzhou times because of bad repair of the dams.

Zhao Mingqi, Expert in culture and history of Xuzhou said: " An alluvial plain in the shape of range was formed because of the frequent floods. This alluvial plain covered the formerly fertile ground, and formed an inorganic vase. This kind of ground is flooded when it rains, and is dry the remainder of the temps". These catastrophes were of a very high frequency lasting of the centuries. Tian Bing' E, Expert as an arts person and history of Xuzhou still said: " The River Huanghe arrived. Slept on the River Huanghe, there is always a concern for the vie".

The word " Xu" of Xuzhou an explanation in the “etymological Dictionary of the characters has”. According to him, Xu means to go stably. The word Xu described in picturesque terms the geographical and geomorphological conditions of ancient Xuzhou: a great extent of fertile ground, the meeting of the Sihui rivers and Bianshui, which are favorable to agriculture and the life.

Celebrities

Xuzhou was the birthplace of Liu Bang and the capital of the kingdom of Western Chu on which Xiang Yu reigned. After the victory of Liu Bang and the foundation of the Dynasty Han, Xuzhou became a stronghold of the imperial family during several centuries. It is towards the end of the Han dynasty that the name of Xuzhou was used for the first time when CAD CAD, Prime Minister for the time, named a governor of district to manage Pengcheng.

It was also the birthplace several famous people such as Liu Yu during the period of the Dynasties of North and the South, Bai Juyi during the Dynastie Tang, Su Dongpo during that of the Song, Fang Xiaoru and Fan Jixun during the Qing, then Li Keran and My Ke.
