Xiph.org

The foundation Xiph.org is a non-profit organization which is opposed to the movement Privatization in the field of the formats multi-media by developing free software and algorithms of multi-media compression free of patent.

Xiph.org currently concentrates its efforts on the series of formats Ogg.

Ogg Vorbis, a audio Format free of rights which makes competition with the formats owners MP3, WMA and AAC.

Ogg Theora, a video format under development, is conceived to make competition with the formats owners MPEG-4, RealVideo and Windows Media Video.

Chris Montgomery is the founder of Xiph.org and also the inventor of the Ogg format.

Etymology

Xiph is the abbreviation of Xiphophorus helleri , a small fish (from where the logo).
