Xert

Xert (Valencian name , Chert , in Castilian) is a common to the north of the Valencian community in Spain. It belongs to the Province of Castellón and more precisely to the area ( Comarque ) of the Baix Maestrat ( Bajo Maeztrazgo in Castilian). Its population in 2005 is of 914 inhabitants.

Geography

It is located in the high valley of the rambla of Cervera, in the Western sector of the comarque one. It primarily mountainous, is dominated by the Redona , the Moleta and the Mola Murada O Tormassal . In the latter are exploited marbled marble careers.

It had approximately 400 inhabitants in 1523; 700 in 1735; 2.650 in 1900, to go down up to 997 in 1994.

Economy

It is based on agriculture and the breeding.

Old church . The old church, with the old leant cemetery, the presbytery and all the antique structure of the village form a whole of a great interest which preserves the structure of the old walls, but is today in a sad state of abandonment.

Civil monuments

Walls and castle . The castle which was built in the place that occupies the old church, as well as the fortifications of the village, are of Arab origin. It passed to the capacity Christians in 1233. The Master of the Ordre of the Hospital had taken possession of it, by anticipated donation of Ramón Berenguer IV, donation respected by Jacques Ier the Conqueror.
