Xavier Marmier

Xavier Marmier (June 24th 1808 with Pontarlier - October 11th 1892 with Paris) is a French man of letters, traveller and translator of the European literatures of North.

After having been briefly librarian with Besancon, it leaves for Paris then voyage in Germany and contributes to the Germanic Revue like with other newspapers. It takes share then with several maritime forwardings in Iceland and Scandinavia. In 1839, he becomes professor of foreign literature to Rennes, but sets out again a few months later for the North pole.

Of return to Paris, it is named librarian with the ministry for the State education. He travels then to the Netherlands, in Finland, Russia and Poland, then with the the Middle East and in Algérie. In 1846, it becomes preserving then general administrator of the Bibliothèque Holy-Genevieve of Paris.

In 1848, it sets out again for the America of North and the South. Of all its voyages, it brings back accounts as well as writings on the literature, the history and the geography of the areas which it traverses. Its Canadian period was the subject of a study of Jean Ménard.

He is elected member of the French Academy in 1870 and is belonged to the commission of the Dictionnaire. Author not only of accounts of voyage but also of translations, poems and novels, Xavier Marmier especially contributed to make known in France the Scandinavian and Germanic literature.
