Xavier Cugat

Xavier Cugat (born the 1900 with Gérone, Spain - October 27th 1990 with Barcelona) is an artist and Spanish musician, called the king of the Rumba . Fascinated by the Violin maker of his city, the legend claims that this last, wearied its questions, gave him a Violon. A little later its family emigrated with Cuba where it became acquainted with the tropical rates/rhythms. At 12 years, it becomes first violin with Havana. At 15 years, he emigrates with the the United States and immediately finds work for the round of Enrico Caruso. As he claimed not to be not good enough with the violin, he gives up his instrument. He leaves to work with Los Angeles as caricaturist. Too constraining work, it founds the group of Cugat and the Gigolos : it is with this group that it captivates the audiences and the dancers, with a music which will be called later the rumba. It settles with the hotel Waldorf-Astoria and becomes the group resident. Of his nickname Cugie , one will also retain his love of the women (4 marriages). In the Fifties, Abbe Lane was his singer and later, in the Seventies and Eighties Charo (its 4th) sang for him and was paid as singer folk. In 1940, “Perfidia” sung by Miguelito Valdés is one of its greater successes. “Siboney” sung by Connie Francis in 2046 of Wong Kar-wai, is a song of Ernesto Lecuona, arranged by Cugat.
