X 4900

The X 4900 is a motorized element tricaisse of the family of the Caravelles. They are derived from motorized the X 4630 with which they divide the same Saurer engines of 330 kw as well as a hydraulic gear box. Motorized the 4900 have a power more important than the other Caravels of with the presence of two motor coaches framing an intermediate trailer, that authorizes them to circulate at a maximum speed of 140  km/h. The esthetics of the series differed from the other Caravels from to their blue, white and gray painting with their delivery. The interior of the 4900 is neat and the SNCF gave up the benches with the profit of individual seats.

The series was firstly assigned to the deposit of Marseilles-Blancarde, which replaced the rail-cars X 2400 and X 2800 in the area. Their higher power saw them assigned to the services travellers on the lines with strong profile of the Alps of the south. The other members of the series were assigned to the deposit of Sotteville-the-Rouen. The 4900 in Normandy circulate often coupled with the autmoteurs X 4500 and X 4750 around Caen, Rouen and Mans and until Rennes and Tours. The remainder of the series FOR THE THIRD TIME joined its colleagues with Sotteville after the arrival of BB 67400 with the service . In spite of the arrival in Normndie of the X 72500 and especially of the X 73500 the 4900 were seen some not withdrawn of the services and continue to roll in complement of the new motorized ones. The X 76500 delivered into 2004 will circulate between Caen and Rouen at the sides of the 4900.

The three elements belonging to the Basse-Normandie accepted with the 2000s beginning of the year a general revision following which they preserved delivered to them origin, the motorized ones belonging to the High-Normandy accepted them FOR THE THIRD TIME delivered it and the new cabins of the X 4630 renovated. Thanks to their reliability X 4900 have to continue servire the two areas contrary to the X 4300 and X 4500 which are put in retirement.
