xxxHOLiC , to pronounce “Holic Cross-country race”, is a Seinen Manga of CLAMP, prépublié in Japan in the Young Magazine of the editor Kōdansha . Into Francophonie, 10 volumes were translated at Pika Edition (the series is always in the course of publication with the Japan). The circle of mangakas having already several series in progress, and the quality of the drawings being the prerogative of the series, the rate/rhythm of publication of volumes of XXX Holic is less constant than for others.

Short summary of the history

Kimihiro Watanuki, high-school pupil, have since always the capacity to see the spirits. Constantly trampled or hustled by Ectoplasm S, it wishes to get rid of this awkward gift.

One day that he was pursued by one of them, Kimihiro enters inadvertently a strange house, wedged between two buildings. It is in this singular residence that it meets Yūko Ichihara, which proves to be able to withdraw this gift to him that it hates so much. But at Yūko, all has a price. Kimihiro will have to help mysterious the conspicuous in its “trade of wishes”, until the sum of its work reaches a value equivalent to its wish. Through this small job, it will meet many people, and of spirits, which it will see evolving/moving according to the policy of a little particular sale of Yūko.

xxxHOLiC is an at the same time humorous and dark manga. Indeed, so certain characters are amusing (Yūko, in particular, who is very particular), the history can per moment to borrow a tone much more serious.

Characteristics of this title

xxxHOLiC is in cross-country race-over with Tsubasa - Tank CHRoNiCLE-, another work of the studio CLAMP. It is inter alia Yūko, known here under the patronym of “witch of dimensions”, which makes it possible to the heroes of this manga to travel through dimensions, in their giving white Mokona. In the following volumes, it intervenes with other recoveries in the course of their history, but for the moment this crossing is without much importance.

As in several mangas of CLAMP, xxxHOLiC enormously contains allusions to other works of the studio. For example, the first volume comprises winks with Cardcaptor Sakura (a copy of the sceptre of Sakura), Lawful Drug (pharmacy) and Tokyo Babylon (the twins exorcists), as well as many others.

On the level of the drawings, there exists a certain difference with other works of the studio. Whereas CLAMP often affectionnent the screens, the graphics of xxxHOLiC exploits on the contrary a contrast between flat tints of black and white zones left, with sometimes some vertical stripes, which gives to the manga a purified style.

Another characteristic of xxxHOLiC is the care granted to the edition connected by the authors and the editor. The covers contain inter alia brilliant parts and the edges of the pages are coloured. It is also to note that the first four pages of each volume are color. With final, the French edition is practically identical to the original one.

Adaptations

  • In 2005 left a film one hour: xxxHOLiC manatsu No yoru No yume (xxxHOLiC 真夏の夜の夢), which without being an adaptation of the manga reports an additional episode. The title can result in " the one night dream of été" , reference to the part of William Shakespeare. Left in the Japanese rooms the August 20th, it is the studio Production I.G. which was responsible for this adaptation.
  • a Anime is diffused on chain TBS since the April 6th 2006, this time, it acts indeed of an adaptation of the manga. The production was entrusted to the same team as that of film.
  • the first season comprises 24 approximately 25 minutes episodes, the last episode was diffused on September 28th, 2006.
  • It was officially announced there is little that a second season is being prepared.
  • a drama CD collector was also given to the purchasers of the first season in DVD.
  • the main characters of XXX Holic, Yûko, Watanuki, Doumeki, Himawari and Mokona, are also put in scene in the series of Drama CD of Holitsuba Gakuen.
