XNU
XNU is the name of the core systems Darwin and Mac OS X. It is a recursive acronym of “XNU' S Not Unix”. It is a hybrid core enriched, based on the micro core Mach, and using the core BSD as a service of the operating system.
In order to cure the intrinsic problems of performances to technologies of the micronucleus (high latencies), Apple modified Mach 3.0 so that it included code BSD within its space of addressing. This approach led to a hybrid system: XNU.
As a micronucleus, Mach offers a manager of memory, manages the Communication inter-process, scheduling and the input-outputs. It can offer these functionalities with guarantees real-time. Environment BSD manages the users and the permissions, contains the management of the networks, supports different filesystems, a virtual filesystem, and ensures compatibility POSIX.
