XMMS
XMMS ( X Multi-media System ) is a audio Lecteur free similar to Winamp, functioning under many operating systems of the family Unix.
History
XMMS was originally coded under the name of X11Amp by Peter and Mikal Alm in November 1997, to fill the “lack of good readers MP3 for Linux”. The reader was coded to resemble Winamp, and for the first time was returned public in May of this year. In fact, XMMS supported from its exit the skins of Winamp. Although the first versions were made under a license which did not get any access to the source code of the program, XMMS is now published under the public license GNU.
June 10th, 1999, the company will 4Front Technologie decided to finance the development of X11Amp and the project was famous XMMS - acronym for X Multi-media System . The majority of the users of XMMS believed that this meant X11 Multimedia System , or X-Window Multimedia System , while the correct interpretation of “X” in XMMS is Cross-country race-platform (in French, “multi-platform”).
Criticisms
XMMS continued to use an old version of the toolkit GTK+ of the years after an updated version was made available. The primary reason of this reserve to be passed to a higher version was than the majority of plugins XMMS depended on an old version of GTK to function correctly. The majority of the developers of software also considered that the code of XMMS was very badly conceived and difficult of access for maintenance. These factors led to different forks:
- Beep Media Player, a Fork of the code of XMMS which uses GTK+ 2, project started in 2003. A rewriting is in hand, the application names BMPx;
- a fork based on GTK+ 2 named XMMS2, of Mohammed Sameer. This project has had for abandoned summer;
- the project XMMS2, a total reconception of XMMS by one of its original authors, Peter Alm. Project started at the end of 2002.
