X.500 indicates the whole of the data-processing standards on the services of Annuaire defined by UIT - T (in the past called CCITT). In practice, only the part X.509 concerning the Authentification is currently used; for the remainder, the majority of the current services of directory use a standard much less heavy: LDAP.

History

In the Eighties, the CCITT had developed a standard of email X.400. At the time of the first versions of X.400 (1984: red book and 1988 blue book), the services of directory necessary to this transport had not been defined. The software publishers who used X.400 had developed and implemented each one their own solution of directory (at the time, one used also the term of " waiters of names ").

To supplement X.400, the CCITT thus developed a series of standards of directory. The first version of the standard appeared in January 1990 (recommendations of the blue book). The ISO was partner of the CCITT to define this standard (under the name of ISO/CEI 9594, in January 1991) and thus to include it in the continuation of protocols OSI.

The protocols defined by X.500 include:

  • DAP ( Directory Access Protocol )
  • DSP ( Directory System Protocol )
  • DISP ( Directory Information Shadowing Protocol )
  • DOP ( Directory Operational Bindings Management Protocol )

The standard X.509 defines what relates to the authentification, it specifies a general format for the public certificate S of key.
