X-Files, at the borders of reality ( The X-Files ) is a Televised series American in 200 43 minutes episodes and a 90 minutes episode, created by Chris Carter and diffused between the September 10th 1993 and the May 19th 2002 on the network Fox. In France, the series was diffused starting from the June 12th 1994 on M6.

Synopsis

The special agents of the FBI, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, main characters of the series, are responsible for the investigations into the paranormaux phenomena. During those, they run up against Monstre S, world plots, “aliens”…

It will be noted that the authors wanted to make their universe realistic and to gum the border which separates their fiction from reality. Thus, throughout the nine seasons that account the series, each place in which the episode proceeds is indicated to the spectator, just like the hour to which the facts occur. This posting, bellow on the left of the screen, gives to the spectator the impression of the setting in image of a true report/ratio of investigation of the FBI.

It is the first time that a series uses as many special effects and musical topics in its episodes. It is also the first series of premium time having for main characters a man and a woman on a purely equal basis.

Credits

The credits remained unchanged during the first 7 seasons. At the time of the eighth season, with the disappearance of Mulder and the appearance of the Doggett agent, the credits were partially modified. For the ninth and last season, it was completely remade. The credits usually end in the sentence " The truth is out there" ( the truth is elsewhere).

The department of the not-classified businesses

This department, created in the current of the Forties, is discovered in 1991 by the agents Fox Mulder and Diana Fowley and is placed under the authority of the section head Scott Blevins then of the assistant editor Walter Skinner. The buildings allocated at this department say some long on the interest carried by the hierarchy of FBI to the research activities of this team: a small office with the basement of the seat of the John Edgar Hoover building, the seat of FBI to Washington.

the department of the not-classified businesses specializes in two types of investigations: the paranormal and the reopening of businesses remaining to elucidate. These businesses are called the X-files . This name comes from the practical spirit of a documentalist working for FBI in the Fifties. She took the initiative to gather under the letter " X" relative files with the businesses not having been elucidated, thus making profitable the low volume of files to be classified under this initial.

the X-files are files for which no conclusion could be brought. Their contents are varied, mixing serial killers, UFO and businesses touching with the occultism and the paranormal. They are stored in the buildings of the department of the not-classified businesses.

During nine seasons, eight agents of the FBI will follow one another in this department: Fox Mulder, Diana Fowley, Dana Scully, Alex Krycek, Jeffrey Spender, John Doggett, Leyla Harrison (which are assigned to the X-Files only for one episode) and Monica Reyes.

The hierarchy and other characters of the FBI

It is on the initiative of the section head Scott Blevins that Dana Scully is attached to the department of the not-classified businesses. Scully is charged to evaluate work of the Mulder agent under a scientific and critical angle.
Initially, the department of the not-classified businesses will be placed under the authority of the assistant editor Walter Skinner. The conduit of this last will be very variable. Of frankly hostile at the commencement of the series, it will become a discrete but effective ally at the beginning of the third season. Later, the blackmail to which delivers itself on him, Alex Krycek will oblige it to lead contrary actions to research of the agents Mulder and Scully.

The world plot

The Trade union

It acts of a restricted circle, made up mysterious men of the whole world, who plot in secrecy.

Since the end of the Second world war, these men communicate with an extraterrestrial race preparing the colonization of the ground. While profiting from logistics from extraterrestrial to hide their work, the Trade union collaborates with their " Amis" in exchange of their survival at the time of the invasion. They make mine undertake genetic experiments aiming at creating a race Hybride between the man and an extraterrestrial life. In same time, and the greatest secrecy, they actually work with the development of a Vaccin which will be their decisive weapon to push back the extraterrestrial invasion (see Purity Control).

the man with the cigarette is member of this circle, and handles more particularly the agents Mulder and Scully. One finds there also Alex Krycek, Jeffrey Spender, the man manicurist,…

Russians

the Trade union is in competition with another circle installed in Russia, with Tunguska which seems much more advanced in the development of the Vaccin thanks to experiments undertaken on political prisoners. This competition is a direct prolongation of the Cold war.

Independent advisers

Deep throat (Season 1)

the pseudonym of this character is a wink with the adviser of the two journalists of the Washington Post, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward in the business of the Watergate.

Accessory to long time of the man to the cigarette, it is defined itself as the " menteur" duet. Informed remarkably well and knowing the truth that Mulder seeks, this character was one of the members of the trade union in the plot relating to the extraterrestrial ones. He will inform the Mulder agent regularly during the first season while proceeding sometimes by intoxication. Indeed, according to him, " a lie is more credible if it is slipped between two vérités".

Mr X (Seasons 2 to 4)

This adviser is more mysterious and much more aggressive, going until facing the Mulder agent physically in an underground car park, and to fight with the Assistant editor Skinner in an elevator.
One knows only few things about him. It seems to be a collaborator of the man to the cigarette, implied inter alia things, in the tests on civil populations of chemical weapons developped at the point by Doctor Suzan Modesky. Very scalded by the death of Deep Throat, it will be shown particularly précautionneux in the contacts that it will take with the Mulder agent. The reasons which made of him an adviser remain mysterious until its death. It is him which will direct the Mulder agent towards Marita Covarrubias.

Marita Covarrubias, SRSG (Seasons 4 to 9)

This assistant of the special representative of the Secretary of the United Nations seems informed many aspects of the plot. However, even if it seems related to the " Groupe" and in Alex Krycek, his degree of implication is difficult to evaluate. The contacts which it ties with the Mulder agent seem to take their place within the framework of a double game of which it will undergo the serious consequences. It will become itself a guinea-pig within the framework of the experiments undertaken by the group.

Solitary Gangsters (or Lone Gunmen )

Again, the pseudonym of these characters - whose more exact translation would be " The Isolés" Gunners; - is a reference to the recent American history. Indeed, after the assassinations of John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the police investigations designated as culprits of the snipers (in English, of the lone gunmen). In the series, Melvin Frohike, Ringo Langly and John Fitzgerald Byers see in this expression the symbol of fight against the plots which are led to the center even American federal state. This trio is the improbable alliance of a do-it-yourselfer in electronics, an hacker and the ex-employee of a federal organization specialized in telecommunications.

These characters systematically see plots hidden in all the events which make their daily life. Living together in a loft Spartan but stuffed data-processing equipment or electronics of any kind, they spend their time to collect, compile all kinds of important information in their eyes. They thus mix secret rumors, information signal and intox in the newspaper which they publish.

These acute paranoiacs become quickly of large friends and supports of Mulder in whom, they see a man of good will that it is necessary to help for finally seeing bursting at the great day the plots which mine the american company. If their first contact with the Scully agent were rather tended (except for Melvin Frohike, immediately under the charm…) because of the skepticism affirmed by the new colleague of their friend, their relations will evolve quickly to more confidence.

Michael Kritschgau (Season 5 and 7)

He is member of one of the services of the Pentagon charged to assemble operations of intoxication aiming at suggesting with the world population the existence of contacts with an extraterrestrial life. It will reveal this enormous trickery with the Mulder agent, then will allow him to enter warehouses of the Pentagon. The Mulder agent will be able to thus see certain elements used by the government in very elaborate hoaxes which are assembled since 1947. It is as thanks to Michael Kritschgau, and with the supply of a master key as Fox Mulder will be able to get a new implant, making it possible to save Dana Scully cancer.
This collaboration with the agents of the department of the not-classified businesses will dearly be paid by this man who will be returned. In spite of its bitterness, it will make all the same its knowledge profitable to save the life of the Mulder agent when this one is in full change.

Extraterrestrial S

They are rather discrete, and their existence is unceasingly called into question on several occasions

Of varied forms, they are sometimes large gray humanoïdes with the black eyes (" Gris"), sometimes an entity transported by a kind of FBI]].
