Wrinkle the Lightning

Ride the Lightning is the second album of the group of thrash Metallica. Compared to its predecessor, Kill 'EM All, this album marks an evolution of the group towards a more complex music. One finds the first there semi-trotts group ( Fade to Black ), which exasperated certain fans who saw a compromising of the group there. It is the first album of Metallica where Kirk Hammett is implied in the writing of the pieces.

Analyzes Songs

Fight fire with fire : First song of Metallica starting with an introduction to the acoustic guitar, which takes then the turning of the fronts thrash metal which make the success of the group. It is also the only song where James Hetfield sings in low frequencies; the remainder of the album is sung in a higher tonality, with the image of the majority of the songs of Kill 'EM All. The title translated " To fight fire by the feu" illustrate the end of the world in relation to well the behavior of the man (An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth).

Wrinkle the lightning : The subject relates to a man condemned to the Electric chair. One could think that the interrogation of the song relates here to the human right to exempt the death of others. It of it is nothing, because James Hetfield is an enthusiastic defender of the Capital punishment; he even assure him later in interview that its goal was to illustrate the fear of a situation where one has any control. It is Dave Mustaine which sang on the Demonstration of the song.

beautiful For whom the tolls : One of the songs heavy metal the most appreciated fans of the group. The song starts with a story which lasts all the first minute of the song, so that a heavy front comes to follow it. This song refers to the book of the same name of Ernest Hemingway ( For which rings the knell ). This novel, just like the song, tries to show the cruelty of the war.

Insipid to black : This song was the first “calm” song of the group, and involved the criticism of the fans of the first hour, who transfer there a deception (too calm song). This song is often regarded as the first song heavy metal using an acoustic guitar for most of the song. The text relates to a man wanting to commit suicide; this song was written after a concert given to Boston, where all their material was stolen.

Trapped under ice : This song speaks about a person who lives like a zombie. The feeling of freezing is probably generated by drug. It is the song the least played in concert of the group.

Escape : The song takes seat in a cell of prison where a man is locked up, and of which he wants to leave. This situation a priori simplistic makes it possible James to approach the topic of individual freedom: “life' S for my own, to live in my own way” (“my life belongs to me, and I it life as I want”).

Creeping death : The topic of this song is one of the Ten plagues of Egypt, namely death of the first born of each family of Egypt. The text speaks with the first anybody in place about “crawling Death”. The title would have been found by Cliff Burton, during the viewing of the film the Ten Commands . By seeing the angel of dead illustrated in the form of fog, Cliff Burton would have exclaimed: “Whoa, that' S like creeping death! ”; James Hetfield would then have answered him: “Whoa, man, that' S fucking poetry! ”. Is this song the only song of the album having given individual, accompanied by two recoveries opposite b: Am I Evil? (of Diamond Head) and Blitzkrieg (of Blitzkrieg). It one of is played in concert by Metallica, and reflects well the style “Old School” of the group.

The cal off Ktulu : Second instrumental song of the group, inspired of the writings of Lovecraft, more precisely of The Cal Off Cthulhu . It is one of the songs which was mainly written by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth (original title When Hell Freezes Over ), before its ousting of the group. Besides Mustaine will re-use one of the continuations of agreements of the piece as bases for the songs Hangar 18 on Rust in Peace . The rearrangement of this song with the assistance of Michael Kamen on S&M was worth with Metallica a Grammy Award for the best instrumental performance rock'n'roll.
