Wright Flyer III

The Wright Flyer III is the third plane built by the Frères Wright for his flight inaugural of the June 23rd 1905 in the Prairies Huffman of the Ohio. First plane of the history of aviation to transport a passenger.

History

The Frères Wright use the system of propulsion of the Wright Flyer II for their new plane which has about the same aspects and performances that the Wright Flyer I and Wright Flyer II preceding.

The serious accident of July 14th, 1905 is worth important modifications to him: the distance between the wings is doubled, of the vertical fixed wings (blinkers) are added with important quality controls during its manufacture. The October 5th 1905 Flyer III course 38,9 km (24 miles) in 39 minutes 23 seconds (longer than totalities of the cumulated flights of versions I and II between 1903 and 1904).

4 days later the Wright brothers write with William Howard Taft (secretary of the defense of the United States, future chair of the United States between 1909 to 1913) to propose to him to sell to him the first military aircrafts of the world with transport of passengers.

The mechanic Charles Furnas is the first passenger to be flown on his board on May 14th, 1908 during 4 minutes above the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk before being crushed without large damage following a bad operation of piloting.

In 1911 the wreck is acquired by Berkshire Muséum of Pittsfield in the Massachusetts without being never exposed. Finally, Orville Wright the fact of repatriating in 1946 to restore it and expose it to the center of exposure of the Brothers Wright Chime Historical Park to Dayton in the Ohio.
