In the universe of the series Babylon 5 , the Vorlon empire is extraterrestrial people, among most mysterious for the characters of this fiction.

Vorlons are a highly advanced race which left its physical shape to exist only in the forms of pure energy. During million years of their spaciale existence, they developed vast companies multiplanétaires through the galaxy. Being in the first races to reach space, Vorlons coexisted peacefully with the other races and formed alliances with their neighbors. During millenia the major part of the other races decided to leave towards new horizons and left the galaxy. Vorlons also left but left behind them some stations and their former inhabited planet-mother. They had decided that it was necessary to help the younger races to develop. They thus contacted these primitive races with an aim of influencing them according to their perceptions of the evolution.

The lower races immediately regarded Vorlons as divine creatures, angels of light, because of their natural form. Vorlons then constituted in these former people of the social structures based on the order. They defined their hierarchical model by a simple question: " Who are you? ". This question made it possible primitive to explore the discovery of oneself in a hierarchical company where personal capacity belonged to an organized unit.

However the empire vorlon was not alone in this task. Another race, even older than them, the Shades, had a diametrically opposed perception. They believed that the evolution of the primitive races would be done efficassement through the war and the conflicts.
