Worldwide production of scientific articles

The table below presents, for the majority of the countries of the world and for the great areas geographical and economic, the evolution of their respective scientific production between 1988 and 2003, of number of articles in science or engineering published each year.

The articles selected are those published in the scientific magazines covered by the Science Quotation Index (SCI) and the Social Sciences Quotation Index (SSCI). Nationalities are allotted according to the institutional addresses of the authors indicated on the article.

The adopted method is that of the fractional counting : for the articles published by authors of various countries, each country is seen allotting a fraction of the publication on the basis of proportion of authors of this country among the signatories of the article. For example, for an article Co-signed by researchers of a French and British institution, France will see itself allotting 0,5 article, as well as the United Kingdom.

World scientific production

For reasons of ordering of the data, the nonwell informed cells indicate 0 publication. That does not mean that the country in question did not produce anything, but that the data are inalienable.
