The world league of volley ball is a competition of Volley-ball which joins together each summer between twelve and sixteen teams, in a test in hen phase with doubles matches return ticket, then a final phase joining together 4 to 6 teams, whose format can evolve/move each year.

It is about a tournament on invitation bringing together the best world teams thanks to the distributed premiums, and with the assumption of responsibility of displacement and subsistence expenses by the organizer. In counterpart, each national federation must present guarantees on the one hand on the participation of the best players, and on the other hand on the cover of the events (TV, press).

History

General

In 1986 was held with Prague the 2nd World congress of the International federation of Volley ball, chaired by the Mexican lawyer Ruben Acosta. Among the decisions taken, there was that of the creation of a “male world League”, competition which would gather best the teams of the world (ten in the beginning, then from now on sixteen). The principal difference with a championship of the world is the premium offered to the winner: 200.000 $ in the beginning (carried to 20 million $ in 2006).

Participants

Here the list of the teams having taken part in the various editions of the world League like their years of competition. The teams of Serbia and Russia are regarded as the heiresses of passed of the respective teams of the USSR and Yugoslavia.

The only teams with being present without interruption since the creation of the test are it and it.

Formulate competition

  1. the 16 participating teams are 16 better world, according to the established ranking by FIVB. They are divided into 4 hens of 4 teams.
  2. the Prime Minister turn (intercontinental turn) lasts 6 weeks during which each team plays two matches against the same team during the same weekend. Three of these double confrontations are held has residence, the three others outside. Each team thus arrives has a total of 12 matches (3x2 matches in residence + 3x2 matches outside), for a total of 96 matches played within the framework of this first turn.
  3. the teams finishing first of their hens, the organizing country and a Wild card chosen by FIVB are qualified for the second turn.
  4. the teams are then divided into two hens (which we will call E and F) of three. The nations meet then according to the following diagram:

  • Day 1

    • E1 vs E2
    • F1 vs F2
    • E3 vs F3
  • Day 2
    • E3 vs E1
    • F3 vs F1
    • E2 vs F2
  • Day 3
    • E2 vs E3
    • F2 vs F3
    • E1 vs F1
  1. Following these matches, the last team of each hen is eliminated, and the two first meet at the time of the semi-finals: the first of the hen E plays against the second of the hen F and conversely.

  2. Then comes naturally the final, preceded by the small final.

to be noted: the final stage proceeds in 5 days, i.e. the teams connect the matches hens, then possibly semi-final and finale without interruption.
