World cup of Alpine skiing
Contrary to the Winter Olympics or to the Championnats of the world of Alpine skiing which crown their winners on only one race, the World cup of Alpine skiing consists in adding with the points throughout the winter season.
Created in August 1966 at the time of the Championships of the World of Alpine skiing by a group of journalists and trainers on an initiative of the French Serge Lang, to defer to the sporting daily newspaper " Equipe" , it is organized since 1967 by the MADE and takes place each year. The majority of the races are organized in Europe, of the tests also on the North-American continent and take place Asian. It sometimes happened to see races organized in Argentine, Australia or New Zealand. The first race was disputed during the winter into 1966/1967 - more precisely on January 5th, 1967 at the time of the tests of Berchtesgaden, in Bavaria.
The five disciplines (descent, salom, giant, Super-G and compound) of the Alpine skiing are represented of almost equal number of races. At the conclusion of each test, the first 30 competitors are seen allotting points going from 1 to 100. The winner of the general classification of the world cup as those of each discipline receive a crystal ball conceived by the company Joska de Bodemais, close to Zwiesel, in the south of Germany.
History and installation of the world cup
The origin of name World cup refers to the Football world cup of 1966. It was installation as from the season 1966 - 67 with only 17 tests for three months. Previously, only of Traditional during the month of January (Kitzbühel, Megève, Wengen or the Arlberg-Kandahar) at February-March followed by a round on the North-American continent took place, by consequence all these tests were integrated into the calendar of the world cup. As of the first year, all the high-speed motorboats of the alpine circuit decided to take part in this new competition thus enabling them to have a great reputation and a better competitiveness. The first two winners of this competition were the French Jean-Claude Killy and the Canadian Nancy Greene. Thereafter, all the great names of the Alpine skiing inscrirent their names with this competition (which became the reference), and of many stations make the request which one day a test can proceed on their premises.
