World confederation of the subaqueous activities
The world Confédération of the subaqueous activities (CMAS) gathers the federations of activities subaqueous of the whole world (such as the French federation of studies and underwater sports and the Belgian Fédération of research and underwater activities). The CMAS is the first true organization of world diving, as well as the pemière to have truly structured the teaching of deep-sea diving.
Created in 1959 by the commander Cousteau and Luigi Ferraro, this organization is based with Rome (Italy). It gathers sporting federations of subaqueous disciplines all over the world.
It gathered, in 1999, nearly one hundred nations.
It is made up of three committees:
- sporting Committee (Apnea, subaqueous Hockey, Stroke with palms, Orientation, Drives out underwater…)
- technical Committee (Standards and equivalences, Education, technical Diving, Safety in diving…)
- Scientific committee (Archeology, marine Geology, Biology and protection of nature, Relations amateur-professionals…)
At present, the CMAS is widespread in many countries of the world. She proposes, thanks to agreements with the national main confederations (like FFESSM and LIFRAS), various “levels of diving” giving access an autonomy corresponding to a drive and a particular theoretical knowledge.
These levels are distributed in two categories: Plunger (P) and Instructor (I). Here various levels:
- Plunger * (1)
- Plunger ** (2)
- Plunger *** (3)
- Plunger **** (4)
- Instructor * (I1)
- Instructor ** (I2)
- Instructor *** (I3)
