World Radio operator Switzerland

World Radio Switzerland (WRS) is a national radio of SRG Swiss SR idea, the public service Suisse and, so does not diffuse a Publicité. She addresses herself to the english-speaking, to the anglophiles and to the " anglo-professionnels". She is the only radio of English language of Switzerland and collaborates with BBC World Service.

The studios are located in the buildings Genevese of the Radio French-speaking Switzerland.

History

In the beginning, this radio was created in 1996 under the name of World Radio Geneva (WRG). It is not whereas about a Genevese and commercial local radio. At the beginning, the shareholding was shared between SRG Swiss SR idea, Reuters and the Journal of Geneva. In 2000, BBC repurchases the shares of Reuters. The actions are then distributed as follows: 40% for the BBC, 40% for SRG Swiss SR idea and 20% for other private investors (of which Reuters and Time, the successor of the Newspaper of Geneva).

June 27th, 2007, the federal Office of the communication allotted a license for the creation of a new national anglophone radio station, World Radio Switzerland, which will have to replace WRG. The Genevese local radio then is put in liquidation a few days later and on November 1st, 2007 the Swiss SR SRG idea takes again the totality of the shares of WRG. With the hierarchical level and operational, WRS depends on the Radio French-speaking Switzerland.

November 5th, 2007 about midnight the radio one started to emit under the name of WRS on its Genevese frequency FM. But it is starting from 12:00 that the new radio really was born with the beginning of the diffusion in DAB.

Diffusion

The radio is available in FM to Geneva and in lemanic part of the basin on the 88.4 MHz . The transmitter is located at the station of arrival of the Téléphérique of the Mount Salève and diffuse with a power of 2000 Watt S.

Since November 5th, 2007 with 12:00, it is also diffused on the network DAB of SRG SR Swiss idea in the cantons of Freiburg, Geneva, Lucerne, Neuchâtel, Tessin and of Vaud. The diffusion in the the Jura, in Were worth and in the remainder of the German-speaking Switzerland should take place during 2008, either with the arrival of the DAB in these areas, or with the opening of a second multiplexes.

One can also receive this radio on some téléréseaux, via satellite or Internet.
