World Price of freedom of the press

the world Price of freedom of the press Guillermo Cano is a distinction decreed each year by UNESCO since 1997 to honor a person, an organization or an institution for its defense or its promotion of the Freedom of the press everywhere in the world, in particular when they are dangerous situations.

This price is given on May 3rd, dates birthday from the declaration of Windhoek, a collection of the principles of freedom of the press realized by African journalists in 1991. This day is celebrated by UNESCO like the world Day of freedom of the press.

The price bears the name of the Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano Isaza, assassinated on December 17th 1986 by henchmen of Pablo Escobar, which reproached him criticisms of its newspaper.

In 2006, the price was decreed with May Chidiac, journalist Lebanese seriously wounded in an attack. The ceremony proceeded with Colombo (Sri Lanka).

In 2007, for the tenth birthday of the distinction, it will symbolically be given in Colombia.

The Price 2007 was decreed on a purely posthumous basis with the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
