The World Fair of Paris of 1889 is it tenth organized World Fair. It took place of the May 6th to the October 31st 1889. Its topic was the French revolution, hundred years after 1789. It is for this exposure that the Eiffel Tower was built.

Places

The World Fair of 1889 was distributed out of 50 hectares in Paris: The field of Mars and the palate of Trocadéro accommodated art and industry while the esplanade of the Invalides was dedicated to the exposures of the French colonies and the ministry for the war. It is a collaborator close relation of the Baron Haussmann which organized the exposure: Jean-Charles Alphand was engineer at the town of Paris, in load of the service of the walks and plantations.

Attractions

A negro village of 400 natives constituted the principal attraction of the exposure. Buffalo Bill had been joined by the printer Annie Oakley and played her famous Wild West Show in front of full houses. Another symbol of this World Fair, the Gallery of the Machines of Dutert and Contamin, illustration of the Industrial revolution moving. The houses of art and industry also highlighted the emergence of the school of Nancy and the arrival of the Art nouveau in France.

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is what it remains of more visible of this exposure. The tower, high, 318 meters was the response of Eiffel to the contest organized by the ministry for industry and the trade to celebrate the centenary of the French revolution. It was revealed in preview after two years of work, at the time of a ceremony in the presence of the Prime Minister Pierre Tirard. She then is very criticized, of the artists signing an article “against erection in full heart of our capital with useless and monstrous tower…”. Construction was to be only provisional and had its safety only with the action of its creator, Gustave Eiffel, which obtained a patent of mining claims.
