The world Day of fight against the homophobie (IDAHO: International Day Against HOmophobia) is celebrated the May 17th.

The purpose of this day is to promote prevention and publicity campaigns to fight against the Homophobie, the Lesbophobie the Biphobie and the Transphobie.

The first day took place on May 17th, 2005, that is to say 15 years day for day after the suppression of the Homosexualité of the list of the mental diseases of the international Classification of the diseases published by the the World Health Organization, namely on May 17th 1990.

The world Day is distinguished from the Marches of the prides:

  • on the principle: where the Steps stress the " fierté" lesbians, the merry ones, (a) and the trans ones; the world Day, it, watch that true shame, it is the homophobie, and that it must be déconstruite in its logics social and fought on the ground;

  • on the practice: at the time them Steps, to leave in the street is a means of being made understand by the civil society; the world Day, it is to enter the civil society to carry the debate in the middle same of the institutions, the schools, the districts, etc

But the two events are complementary:

  • certain people who, even sensitive to the problem of the homophobie, estimate not to have their place within a Walk of the Prides, can give their support through the alternative which constitutes one Day against the homophobie.

  • in certain countries where the organization of a Walk of the Prides is obviously impossible, an action against the homophobie can be under consideration at the time of the world Day, especially when, officially at least, homosexuality is not condemned by the laws in force.

Thus, the world Day can constitute a political lever prolonging the action of the Steps for the people, or the countries, who cannot (or do not want) fall under the logic of those.

Europe " will celebrate each year, on May 17th, the international day against the homophobie"
