Workshop of urban research and action

The Workshop of urban Research and Action , better known under the name ARAU , is an association created in 1969 by various personalities, the architect and town planner Maurice Culot, the theologist and priest of the Marolles, Jacques Van der Biest, the sociologist Rene Schoonbrodt and the lawyer Philippe de Keyser. Its goal is to make so that the urban stakes of Brussels are treated by the public authorities in a transparent and total way. For this reason association asserts currency entered with the pediment of the town hall of Verviers: Publicité safeguards of the people .

Since its creation the ARAU did not cease working with the " right to the ville" , approaching all the topics which make it possible all the inhabitants of the town of take an active part in the life of the city. Among those, one will note housing, mobility, work in the city, public spaces, the institutions, etc

ARAU organizes every year, during the last week of March, a cycle of conferences which approach during five evenings a topic defined by the office of association. This " School urbaine" in March 2008 will be held, for the 39e time. Association organizes also every year of the seminars known under the name of " Midday of the urbanisme" as well as a voyage in a European metropolis where the members of association can compare the good practices as regards urban policy and town and country planning.

The ARAU is an association member of Inter-Environment Brussels, the federation of the committees of inhabitants of Brussels.

Presidency

In 2000, after a long presidency of Rene Schoonbrodt, Marc Brother, town planner and director at the Company of Development for the Area of Brussels-Capital, succeeds to him and becomes the current president.
