The Workshop of Montrouge , of the name of the workshop located at 32, rue d'Estienne- d' Orves with Montrouge, is a founded workshop of architecture in November 1958 by four young architects: Jean Renaudie (1925-1981), Pierre Riboulet (1928-2003), Gerard Thurnauer (1926) and Jean-Louis Véret (1927) and credit until in 1981.
The term of Workshop of Montrouge is not personal but usual; it indicates two distinct periods of association: “Workshop of architecture Renaudie, Riboulet, Thurnauer and Véret architects” (ATM1, 1958-1968) and “Workshop of architecture Riboulet, Thurnauer and Véret architects” (ATM2, 1968-1981).
For its first projects, the workshop receives the Price of the Circle of architectural studies in 1965 and, for the whole of its work, the national Grand Prix of Architecture in 1981.
Formed with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the Art schools, within the workshop of Georges Gromort and Louis Arretche (1945-1952), Riboulet, Thurnauer and Véret are marked by an experiment with Michel Ecochard at the town planning service of the Morocco (stays in 1949-1952) and their participation in the international Congrès of modern architecture (preparatory congress of Sigtuna in 1952, contribution to the CIAM 9 of Aix-en-Provence in 1953, with the CIAM-Paris group). Graduates in November 1952, they collaborate initially with great figures of the time: Véret with Le Corbusier with Ahmedabad (responsible on the spot for the building sites, of 1952 to 1955), Riboulet and Thurnauer with Jean Prouvé within the Workshop of industrialization of construction (ATIC) for an overall project of 190 emergency residences Move with Argenteuil then in partnership with Ecochard for the project by federal University of Karachi, with the Pakistan (1954-1959). At the time of the implementation of this last project, the Riboulet-Thurnauer-Véret trio is resoldered and collaborated, since 1956, with Jean Renaudie, which for its part followed the teaching of Auguste Perret then of Marcel Lods to the Art schools (1946-1959). In 1958, they decide to found their workshop.
Within the framework of their practice, these four architects choose a mode of exercise then marginal, the associative system, and support before the hour a multi-field step. Their action, which nourishes collective reflection, is not a side of the great orders of housing of mass, great operations of ZUP or urban renovation. It touches of close with town planning and concerns the patient research, which gives an attention to the least details of the achievements. In the landscape of the time, the workshop is dissociated by being located as regards opponent at a reducing and systematic vision, constantly seeking to renew the theories and models. Its policy, modest, reserved, will be able to join together the right to the habitat and the right to the city in the search of another modernity, median solution between the clean slate and the nostalgia of the past, between the heroic act and the banality. The members of the Workshop also affirm themselves like engaged intellectuals, in particular in the mobility of May 68, while taking part in their manner with the events. Riboulet and Véret found in 1969, the multi-field group “M68 Environment”, whose objective is the drafting of one white paper on the social Housing. Pierre Riboulet takes part in addition in the creation of the review Espaces and companies , in 1970, with Henri Lefebvre and Anatole Kopp.
The step of the Workshop takes account of built social reality and, the history, time. Finding its bases on investigations of ground, it tends to do as well if not better than existing it, to give him a quality, an identity, by the implementation of new morphologies, new typologies, a new esthetics. This research continues, prolongs, complexes the ideas of the Modern Movement, revalues the precepts of the Charter of Athens. It is federated by the topic of combinative, which joins together the scales and condenses the concepts of continuity and diversity, mobility, dynamism, flexibility and evolutionarity. It implements principles of screens, a play of articulation in three dimensions, founding effects of rate/rhythm, of dynamism, giving rise to various assemblies, various forms.
To this engaged course, to this standpoint which continues and is posted with time, testifies today very a small number of achievements, which are at the point of meeting between the principles of the Modern Movement and the rules of traditional composition. These achievements, emblematic, belong to the field of the reinterpreted memory.
Jean Renaudie leaves the workshop as of on July 31st 1968: beyond differences in point of view on the events of May 68, they are in disagreement on the project of installation of the new city of the Valley-with-Reuil. Renaudie would have wished an installation of the city on cliff dominating the flat and wet site envisaged in the beginning. From the January 1st, 1979, each one has the right to exert with in an individual capacity, Pierre Riboulet then leaves the team in her turn. The workshop is closed at January 1st 1982.
