The workshop in industry

In the Industry, the workshop is, in a Usine, the space devoted to the Fabrication.

In the beginning the workshop ( the astelier ) is a place where wood is worked. It becomes the place of creation of the Artisanat and the fine art. It also indicates the group of people who work under the direction of a Maître.

At the beginning of the industrial era, the workshops are gathered in Manufacture S then in Usine S.

The workshops generally remained, within the factories, of the zones where the same know-how is gathered, the Maîtrise of a trade. Only small the Undertaken S, close to the craft industry, manufactures or carries out their production in a single workshop where all the means of Fabrication are established, i.e. the work stations and the machine tools.

In mechanical engineering, the workshops dedicated to a trade, are sometimes reimplanted in small islands of manufacture (preferred in French with the word “cell”), gathering machines intended for Usinage S varied. (See: Technology group.)

To draw up a list of the workshops which one can meet in industry would be equivalent drawing up a list of the trades of all industries. This list also corresponds to different the Procédé S from manufacture. The workshops created a specialized vocabulary

• Control of workshop: apart from the artistic field, it is rare that a member of the hierarchy is called “Maître. ” It is generally called “Chef of workshop”. Its assistants are however “foremen”.

• the Ouvrier S qualified working in a workshop are traditionally called “Compagnon S” jusques in the years 1970. Denomination borrowed from the Compagnonnage, even if their formation of Apprenti did not proceed in this context.

• “Management of workshop”, “ planning of workshop”, “piloting of workshop” indicate methods of Planification and Production control with course-term, and finished capacity. The allowance of the tasks to the Ressource S is done according to their real engagement and of their effective potential.

Certain workshops have remarkable specificities

• the workshop of Assembly or assembly

It is the workshop towards which all the components of a complex industrial product converge.

Laying out, at the beginning of the industrial era, of a Labor cheap and abundant, it is the workshop of the assembly on line, with the chain, where each operation is thoroughly cut out in the most precise possible way so that each gesture is useful, with the minimum of wasted time (Fordisme).

It is the workshop of the “semi-skilled workers” (OS).

It is the workshop where the Modernization has the most potential progress.

• the workshop of final improvement or repair

This workshop is that which very undertaken seeks to do to disappear. The Zero defect is a universal objective.

The artistic workshop

The contemporary workshop is in general the part of work of an artist, possibly helped by pupils. It is this direction of the word workshop which was exported in the world ( workshop in English, atolié in Japanese).
