In the beginning the workshop ( the astelier ) is a place where wood is worked. It becomes the place of creation of the Artisanat and the fine art. It also indicates the group of people who work under the direction of a Maître.
At the beginning of the industrial era, the workshops are gathered in Manufacture S then in Usine S.
The workshops generally remained, within the factories, of the zones where the same know-how is gathered, the Maîtrise of a trade. Only small the Undertaken S, close to the craft industry, manufactures or carries out their production in a single workshop where all the means of Fabrication are established, i.e. the work stations and the machine tools.
In mechanical engineering, the workshops dedicated to a trade, are sometimes reimplanted in small islands of manufacture (preferred in French with the word “cell”), gathering machines intended for Usinage S varied. (See: Technology group.)
To draw up a list of the workshops which one can meet in industry would be equivalent drawing up a list of the trades of all industries. This list also corresponds to different the Procédé S from manufacture. The contemporary workshop is in general the part of work of an artist, possibly helped by pupils. It is this direction of the word workshop which was exported in the world ( workshop in English, atolié in Japanese).
