Working events of Limoges
The term of events ouviers of Limoges in 1905 is used to indicate the strikes and the manifestations of the workmen, mainly the porcelain ones, who took place between February and May 1905.
Protesting against the low wages and the foremen, the ouviers of the shoe and the felt are the first to be put in strike.
In March, the arrival of a new general to the head of the division of Limoges is badly perceived, and the workers of Haviland (porcelain) join the movement in solidarity with their returned comrades.
The strikes spread in April with printing works and all the porcelain. The red flag is hoisted on the roof of Haviland manufacture. The president of the Council Maurice Rouvier request so that the exchanges between workmen and owners succeed. The talks are pushed back.
The Lock-out is committed.
The army intervenes on April 14th. A brawl bursts, one deplores a killed horse. Military reinforcements are sent. Any assembly is prohibited by the prefecture, of arms manufacture are plundered.
April 17th, a procession formed after a meeting of the CGT smashes the entry of the prison. A troop of riders dragons is dispatched. A violent one confrontation follows itself from there. Fire is opened, one deplores a death, name of Camille Vardelle.
The funeral of the Vardelle young person is followed, two days later, by tens of thousands of people.
The event of Limoges is reported in the French and foreign famous daily newspapers, giving to Limoges its nickname red city .
April 21st, work begins again after the success of the negotiations, but the employees keep claims. May 1st, some are received by the mayor Emile Labussière. The strikers block the Beaulieu factory, and are joined in the movement by the tradesmen.
The gendarmes disperse crowd.
