The workers party (or HaAvoda ) is a left left, Zionist, modernistic, reformist. He is member of the Internationale Socialist and observer of the European Socialist party.

Other denominations

The Israeli workers party knew various names during its existence:

  1. Mapai of 1930 to 1970;
  2. HaMaarach (fusion between Mapai and Mapam);
  3. HaAvoda, name into force currently;
  4. Plain Israel (in partnership with Gesher and Meimad of 1999 to 2001).

Description

The workers party belongs to the International Socialist. It holds 19 seats with the Knesset. In a recent past (until in 1977), the workers party dominated the Israeli political life, since the Likoud then Kadima took a broad place in the political life. The workers party is a partner of the coalition to the capacity directed by Kadima.

History

Mapai was founded in 1930 by David Ben Gourion and Golda Meir, by the fusion of the parts Achdut Ha' avoda and Hachomer Hatzaïr.

The new party directed the Yichouv (Jewish community to Palestine) then the State of Israel until the elections of 1977, gained by Likoud.

Its important figures are or were David Ben Gourion, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres. The last Prime Minister member was Ehud Barak.

Barak is elected chief of the Workers party the June 12th 2007 vis-a-vis Ami Ayalon, a former chief of Shin Beth. It succeeds Amir Peretz eliminated as of the first turn the May 28th.

Ideology

The party has an electoral program of center left, near to that of Tony Blair. Nevertheless, the Israeli system of representation which makes it possible many parties to be elected often prevents the majority party from fully applying its programs; this is why the party could not apply all its ideas when it was with the capacity, and does not differ fundamentally from what could be applied by Likoud.

Concerning the israélo-Palestinian Conflict, the workers party knows internal oppositions. Some (like Amram Mitzna, Avraham Burg, Yuli Tamir) support the peace negotiations with the Palestinians and preach the dismantling of the Israeli Colonies in the occupied territories. They criticize for the majority the current military tactics used against the Palestinians, mainly the “targeted Assassinats” of the terrorist chiefs. In 2003, the party knew a schism besides when its former members Yossi Beilin and Yael Dayan created a new party.

Some following the example Shimon Peres and Binyamin Ben-Eliezer militate in favor of negotiations with the Palestinians in condition of the stop of terrorism and the replacement of the current Palestinian government by non-violent government a “which would be in favor of peace.” They support the erection of the Barrière of Israeli separation whose objective is to prevent the attacks in Israel, as well as an unilateral withdrawal of the occupied territories by Israel. They are nevertheless in favor of a “war against terrorism”, and thus in favor of the “targeted assassinations.” They wish the installation of a government of National union with Likoud in the condition which the government promotes the peace process and withdrawal of the colonies.
