Work Projects Administration

The Works Projects Administration or WPA (created under the name of Works Progress Administration ) was the principal agency instituted within the framework of the New Deal. It was created on May 6th 1935, by a presidential order (the Congrès financed it, but did not set up it). The WPA employed American million , and its influence extended to the near total from the localities, primarily in the mountainous regions and rural of the west of the country. The WPA supplemented the Federal Emergency Relief Administration installation under Hoover, and maintained under the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt. Under the direction of Harry Hopkins, the WPA aimed to provide employment and incomes to the unemployed, victims of the Grande Depression. Within the framework of the policy of great work, the program contributed to the construction of many public buildings, roads, and directed many projects in Art, Comédie and Littérature. The WPA made it possible moreover to nourish children, to redistribute food, clothing, as well as residences.

The WPA made build or renovate: 110000 schools, stations, post offices; : 100000 bridges and: 800000 km of roads were arranged.
