A word game is in general any play of language which handles the words or of sonorities, and in particular that which consists in creating two homophonous words or sentences (generally humorous) having a different direction.

If the word game results from an unfortunate chance, one will speak about Kakemphaton.

Various types of word games

  • Acrostic: poem in which the initial ones of each worms compose a word
  • Allographe: continuation of letters which has directions only if those are marked one after the other (L.H.O.O.Q), (F.L.M.N.H.)
  • Anacyclique: word which can be read from right to left (with a different direction). Christmas/Leon, traced/variation, name/my, meal/to sap . On the other hand, Laval is a Palindrome.
  • Anagram: permutations of letters which form a new mot. Boris Vian → delighted Bison
  • Antonomase: proper name used as common noun. Watt, Amp, gift Juan, Sanctimonious hypocrite, Pénélope, Vandal, Shrew…
  • Autotraduction : name which broken up into two terms gives the translation of the first in another language. Eggplant → Inn (Fr) Inn (in) , Waterloo → toilets (nl) water (Fr)
  • Cacography: Faulty orthography/bad style.
  • exquisite Corpse: play aiming at adding words to the fur to measurement, without seeing those already written, until forming a surrealist sentence.
  • Pun: word game based on Homonymy (words which decides in the same way) or the Polysémie (word having several directions). Ask our exquisite words!
  • Charade
  • Cratylisme : belief in a natural and fixed symbolism of the sounds (name resulting from a dialog of Plato, the Cratyle)
