Comment
With its public of 400 000 people,
Woodstock is not the largest festival of the time, but it is that which marked the spirits the most, because carrying to its paroxysm a mode of spectacle and communication and an assertion in a way of being. The film largely contributed to this impregnation and its diffusion at the beginning of the Années 1970.
Around film
- 200 km of film were turned during the event.
- In front of the paralysis of circulation, the agent of Joni Mitchell declined at the last time the invitation to take part, so that it carries out its first appearance TV in the Dick Cavett Show of CBS. Ironically, Jefferson Airplane and Crosby, Stills & Nash, which took part in the festival, could occur all the same in this emission. A few days later, it composed the song Woodstock which was a success for Crosby, Stills & Nash (it was with Graham Nash at the time), and which is used as credits of end with film. She regarded her non-participation with the event as one of the greatest regrets of her life.
- Among the participants not appearing in film:
- Ravi Shankar: dispute on the rights
- Grateful Dead: the members of the group found that the service was not sufficiently good and insisted not to appear in the film
- Creedence Clearwater Revival (JRC): problems of sound.
- the festival was a financial disaster. In addition, after several film commercial failures of the same kind, Warner hesitated much to leave film. Years later, the receipts reported by film and triple album (vinyl) initial were largely higher than the deficit.
- a new version Director' S cut , longer, film left in 1994.
