Wood-the-Duke (s-Hertogenbosch or Den Bosch in Dutch) is a city of the Netherlands, chief town of the Brabant-Septentrional .

It was the prefecture of the old French department of the the Mouth-of-Rhine at the time of the Annexation by France of the Royaume of Holland in 1810.

Population (in 2004): 133.628 inhabitants.

History

Wood-the-duke was one of the principal cities of the Duché of the Brabant (the others were Brussels, Leuwen and Antwerp). It was founded in 1185 by the duke Henri Ier of the Brabant, with the confluence of the Aa and the Dommel, which from here form the Dieze together. The Midsummer's Day cathedral is set up there in Gothic style blazing. It is the place of pilgrimage largest Marial of the Netherlands. The miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin is called the Douce Mother, (of Zoete Moeder.)

The Concentration camp Nazi of Herzogenbusch , one of rare apart from the Germany and of the Austria, was near the city (with Vught ). From January 1943 at September 1944, approximately 30.000 prisoners were interned there.

Sport

Wood-the-duke accommodates each year the tournament of Tennis of Rosmalen and was the town of departure of the Tour de France cyclist in 1996. Moreover the local team of Basketball, name of Eiffel Towers Den Bosch has one of the most beautiful prize list of the country, and reached the final of the Coupe Saporta in 1979.

  • Abraham van Diepenbeeck, engraver (and painter) raises Rubens, born on May 9th, 1596 with Wood-the-Duke and deceased with Antwerp on December 31st 1675.

By syncope, Wood-the-Duke gave his name to the bolduc, ribbon being used for the packing of the packages gifts manufactured in this city.
