Chief town of the province of Kangwon, Wonsan is a North-Korean port city of 331.000 inhabitants, located on the sea of the East (gulf of Tongjoson). A ship of the diaspora North-Korean to the Japan, gathered within the Chongryon, establishes a regular connection between the North Korea and the Japanese archipelago.

Founded as of the Koguryo dynasty, the city received its current name of Wonsan under the Koryo dynasty. In 1883 it was one of the Korean ports constrained by the Japanese (who renamed it Gensan) to open with the international business. Become a Japanese naval base during the Japanese occupation under the Second world war, the city then was mainly destroyed.

In addition to its port activities, the city shelters textile industries, food (transformation of the agricultural produce: rices, fishings), chemical, of naval constructions and engines, as well as oil refineries.

The hotels of Wonsan lodge the tourists visiting the Kumgang mounts or Kumgangsan.
