Wolverine
Wolverine is a character of Cartoon (Comic) of Marvel Comics, Super-héros member of the X-Men and New Avengers. Its true name is James Howlett, but having forgotten its past, it is made call Logan.
Its first appearance goes back to 1974, in the United States, on the last page of the magazine Incredible Hulk number 180 where its arrival for the following number is announced.
In France, the character is baptized Glouton by the editor Arédit but was already called Serval by the editions Lug when it appeared in the series of new X-Men. The term “Glouton” (not the greedy individual but the obstinate animal of North America) or “carcajou” is the correct translation of Wolverine, on the one hand the word is pejorative in French, and the Serval is the only animal equipped with the same sense of smell as Wolverine.
In the years 1990, the popularity of Wolverine is such as it joined the most famous supermen of Marvel, like Spider-Man. It finds in France its original name in 1997 at Panini Comics.
Wolverine dissociates majority of the heroes by his violence. It is the only one with enfreindre the expensive rule with Cyclops: X-Men do not kill.
Character
Wolverine is a hero characteristic of the Marvel universe. Its psychology is largely influenced by its supers-capacities which are, mainly, the fruit of its personal history. It belongs to a category of superman presenting of the animal characters to which belonged the Fauve, the Black Panther, Spider-Man etc
Fictitious biography
When the character is created, Logan is Canadian government official and superman under the name of Wolverine. Its most famous combat is that against Hulk and Wendigo whereas they sow the destruction around them. Its speed and its agility enable him to face these two colossi without suffering from the comparison.Wolverine is mutant with the skeleton covered with Adamantium, a indestructible metal. It has retractile claws also covered with the same metal, but which form integral part of its skeleton. Indeed, the project Weapon X carried out by the Canadian government made of him an hyper-effective soldier by recovering his skeleton of adamantium. But the experiment was if traumatisante that its memory was deteriorated by it and that he did not remember any more his past.
It is collected by James and Heather Hudson to form the Division Alpha, a group of Canadian superman. Whereas it is had a presentiment of to become leader of the group, it chooses to leave it (in fact, because he is in love with Heather) to join X-Men, recruited by the Professor Xavier. A strong hostility is born between Hudson and him because of this decision. The Canadian government tries to make it bring back of force from the United States. After the failure of these attempts, Hudson and Wolverine make peace.
On its arrival at X-Men, Wolverine is misanthropist, solitary, and supports the authority badly. This bad character often causes clashes with Cyclops, the leader of X-Men. However, through drive and of patience, he manages to control his bestial instinct and his vindicatory mood. These defects are also what makes its force when it is a question of facing adversaries with the superhuman force. In spite of this temperament, he is also a warrior with the heart of poet.
It proves to be a man with the multiple talents. He speaks Japanese, Russian, Chinese, cheyenne, lakota, and Spanish; he has knowledge in French, Thai, and Vietnamese. He follows a code of personal honor and binds friendship with his X-Men colleagues, in particular Diablo, however so different from him. X-Men call familiarly it Logan, without it knowing itself from which this nickname comes. One learns however in 2001, at the time of the saga Origin , which it resulted from a rich person family (patronym James Howlett) whose gardener was named Logan… Logan meets during a forwarding with the Japan Lady Mariko Yashida. Later, it is forced to kill the father of this one at the time of face to face to destroy the trust of the crime which it controls. Mariko and Logan approach, but because of a strange code of honor of the family of the Japanese woman and also because of handling of the Cerveau, she refuses to marry it in spite of their reciprocal attraction. She is poisoned by Reiko, an assassin Yakuza and of Silver Fox what constrained Wolverine to shorten its sufferings by killing it out of its claws, with its request, to put a term at the action of incurable toxin. This dramatic event upsets Logan and marks forever it, making it more considered.
He knows then many adventures, and faced many enemies, like Sentinelles hidden in Australia, Lady Deathstrike, the cyborg Cylla and Bloodscream which pursued it in the Canadian Far North, Cyber…
One of the hardest tests that it had to endure is the extraction of its adamantium by Magnéto. The adamantium had in fact blocked the evolution of its change, and it started to regress towards a wild state. Its factor of cure, also blocked to him by adamantium, was readjusted, at an incredible level and a speed after a time of total inactivity (Logan even believed that its factor was lost).
Of return on the island of Madripoor, it marries Vipère there, by debt of honor, and is violently attacked by Tooth-of-Saber at the top of its form. Kitty Pryde saves the life to him.
Genesis, the adoptive son of Apocalypse, tightens to him a trap with the Dark Riders, to transform it into Rider of the Apocalypse. But the plan fails, and Genesis and several Dark riders (Lifeforce, Spyne and Hurricane) are killed. Wolverine is then helped by Elektra to cure its regression in an animal, primitive state.
While a Skrull was made pass for Wolverine, Apocalypse succeeds in removing adamantium of Tooth of Saber to cover the skeleton with it with Wolverine, transforming it into one of its riders: Death. But Wolverine ends up succeeding in recovering its personality.
It is him which decapitated the impostor of Magneto, when the latter seized the Institute and threatened to destroy New York. The sacrifice of Jean Grey in space was also a great emotional traumatism. Following the death of Jean, Logan had more than ever problems with Cyclops, not including/understanding the consolation that it found with Emma Frost.
Since end 2004, the tandem Mark Millar and John Salvatore Romita Jr. took the destiny of Wolverine in hand: the Hand and HYDRA captured the hero and Gorgone, a mysterious being, made him a washing of brain. Since, they use it to assassinate their opponents, in particular the agents of the SHIELD of Nick Fury. It kills thus Vega, its former team-member of Division Alpha. It takes again shortly after the control of itself and leaves then in a crusade against Hydra causing a hecatomb which places it overhanging with Captain America.
Today, Wolverine remains an important member of the Astonishing X-Men. He is also officer of the Executive agency X-Treme Sanctions (XSE) and he recently joined the team of the New Avengers just like of other famous hero like Captain America, Iron Man and Spider-Man.
One month later in the crossover House off M (House of M) which transports us in a world where the mutants are dominant and the dominated sapiens, Wolverine becomes one of the members of elite more recognized Red Guard of SHIELD which achieves the most dangerous missions for the government directed by Magneto with its partner Raven Darkholme and it finds all its memory. He is also the only hero who remembers other reality.
Following this adventure, Wolverine begins an avenger search against the SHIELD and the Department K.
After the events of the crossover Civil War , Wolverine launched out to the continuation of the man whom he considered responsible for the slaughter of Stamford, Nitro. It found it and trapped it with the assistance of Namor. It remained at the side of Captain America, in the camp of Act anti-Registration.
Supers capacities
At the same time natural and artificial origins, the capacities of Wolverine imitate qualities of the small mammal, American cousin of the marten of which it bears the name. Like him, it is prone to accesses of unverifiable brutality and rage which multiply by ten its agility and its force already higher than the average. Very courageous, he does not hesitate to face adversaries which dominate it in the face and force such as Hulk or Tooth of saber. In the beginning, its capacities were the autoguérison and the exit of long claws nonmade up of adamantium. Its principal talent is its “factor healer” which enables him to heal very quickly after a wound. With the wire of the episodes, this capacity even develops while enabling him to regenerate eyes or broad portions of flesh. It can even on the occasion reconstitute a whole member.
It is thanks to this “factor healer” that it could support the multiple operations after with which its skeleton was entirely covered with Adamantium, the hardest metal which is. Its fists obtained with puberty three retractile claws. These claws are at the base of the bones, which were then covered with adamantium. These claws spout out at will, via openings on the back of its hands.
Other happy consequences rise from this capacity of regeneration: an immunity with the diseases and the majority of toxic substances (with nonmassive amounts); an exceptional physical resistance which enables him to support an effort during several days without feeling of tiredness; a process of slowed down ageing (the character would be old of more than one hundred years); an extremely developed agility and reflexes.
Wolverine also has hyperdéveloppés directions, comparable with those of the animals: he sees or hears more distinctly than human normal and he can track a prey with his odor. Although these capacities are remarkable, the encyclopedia Official Handbook off the Marvel Universe indicates that they are lower than those of Daredevil and could rise from its capacity of cure. Its physical appearance presents characters of bestiality: disproportionate canines, nails in the shape of claws…
Origins and history of the publications
Wolverine appears for the first time in 1974 in two episodes of The Incredible Hulk (numbers 180 and 181 published in October and November) under the drawing of Herb Trimpe and the scenario of Len Wein. The first booklet is used as advertisement to the character who appears only in the last label of the history. Hulk, which is stray in the Canadian far North, there is confronted with a simiesque monster and blanchâtre called Wendigo. The Canadian government, appreciating little the presence of these two terrors on its territory, sends against them “the weapon X” which is not other than Wolverine.
In the second booklet, the character reveals himself fully by facing the two Titans, one green and the other white, covered of a blue costume and yellow which is the work of John Romita Senior. From the start, is thus posed its consistent principal character in a not very common ferocity which pushes it, in spite of its small size, to attack larger and more extremely than him.
This first misadventure of the character has yet, neither its skeleton and its claws of adamantium, nor its “factor healer”, which will make its originality and its future celebrity. At most it is equipped with three claws attached to its two gloves.
It could extremely well have sunk then in the lapse of memory if Len Wein had not been charged, in 1975, at the request of Roy Thomas, to then start again the team of X-Men in lose speed. The order consisting in composing a more cosmopolitan team, Len Wein thinks naturally of Wolverine, hero Canadian, who corresponds perfectly to this schedule of conditions.
It thus reappears in the magazine Giant-Sized X-Men #1 at the sides of a German (Diablo), of a Russian (Colossus), African (Tornado) and an Indian (Sparrowhawk) drawn by Dave Cockrum, which modifies its mask for the occasion. Following warm welcome of the public, new X-Men become a series as from August 1975 with Chris Claremont with the scenario.
It is Chris Claremont which grants Wolverine its new capacities all while authorizing it with better controlling its character. However, the character remains in spite of rather insipid so much so that Claremont would have thought of making him leave the series. But the replacement of Cockrum by John Byrne shift the situation. Canadian of adoption, Byrne sticks to Wolverine to which it offers in 1980 a costume altered in tons brown. These evolutions start to arouse the interest of the public.
A capital change intervenes in the character, at the time of an episode scenarized by Frank Miller, when this one shows its taste of the Japanese culture. Regarding as a kind of “missed samurai”, Frank Miller makes of them an anti-hero much more subtle in whom brutality is only one mask. In that, he is well the worthy successor of the Fauve, this other lout badly formerly loved member of X-Men.
Several mini-series centered on this hero were published as from 1982. Thereafter, Marvel decided 1988 to devote a magazine dedicated to the character, Wolverine #1 , scenarized by Chris Claremont and drawn by John Buscema, which left in November 1988.
The origins of Wolverine, which were a long time one of the great mysteries of Marvel, “definitively” were fixed in 2001 in the mini-series Origin , by Joe Quesada, Bill Jemas, Paul Jenkins, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove. It was envisaged at the beginning that it is a glouton which would have evolved/moved into human thanks to the Master of the Evolution (this idea was quickly rejected)

Wolverine in other media
Wolverine is one of the most important members of X-Men for Marvel. It is indeed the only character present in each adaptation of this license in the form of film, cartoon or video game. It is even one of only to have been entitled to its own video game.In the cartoon X-Men: Evolution , produced for television, Wolverine is a man reserved, distant, carrying a past full with mysteries. Its memory is reduced to some contradictory flashes. It was invited by Professor Xavier at his Institute. Although it causes the fear and mistrust on behalf of the students, X-Men benefit from its experiment and its techniques of combat while trying to avoid the conflicts which had with its solitary and aggressive temperament.
In the film adaptations of X-Men, Wolverine is interpreted by Hugh Jackman, although its size is not adapted to the size of the character of comic (see Remarques on the size, Ci below). It plays there a paramount role which contributed to the broad success of films in the world. Before directing itself towards this choice, it is the American singer Glenn Danzig which had been had a presentiment of by the production of film to play the part, because of its resemblance to the character. The fans as for them wished to see Jack Nicholson holding the role, thing which was not possible within sight of its old. In this version, it is William Stryker who is responsible for the addition of adamantium to the skeleton of Wolverine.
Remarks on the size
In the starting comics, it is relatively small (1m62) in conformity with the image of the glouton or carcajou ( wolverine in English). On the other hand in various more recent adaptations (like films or the series of comics Ultimate X-Men), Wolverine measures close to 1m90.
With the cinema
A film would be planned for on May 1st, 2009 on Wolverine. The film will have as a title: " X-Men Origins: Wolverine " .
