Wolfsbourg is a German city-district of Lower Saxony on the Aller and longest channel of Germany, the Mittellandkanal. The City account 122  631 inhabitants on a Surface of 204,01 km ² (Given to the June 30th 2003).

The city is at one hour of Berlin in ICE (but with more than 200 km by the road), approximately 80 km of Hanover and right beside Braunschweig.

In Wolfsburg the seat of the Car manufacturer Volkswagen is.

A little history

Wolfsburg was yet only one small village with a castle of the Renaissance around Fallersleben (become a district of Wolfsburg today), when on July 1st 1938 was founded the city of the Volkswagen Coccinelle named Stadt of KdF-Wagens .

The April 11th 1945, at the time of the Second world war, the factory was the target of an attack of the Alliés and with two thirds was bombarded. After the war, the city was officially famous “Wolfsburg” in connection with the historical village on which it had been built.

Then, the factory of Volkswagen was directed by English Major Hirst.

In 1955, the millionth Ladybird left the factory. This event was celebrated in all the city with the car carrying number 1.000.000.

During the years of the Economic miracle, Wolfsburg knew a considerable growth, with the arrival of Foreign workers, in majority Italy NS.

In 1972, the surrounding communes (like Fallersleben and Vorsfelde) were integrated into the commune of Wolfsburg. Streets Piéton nières were created in 1980. A museum of art opened in 1994.

The city is present on Internet since 1997.

In year 2000 was created the exposure-museum “city of the car” (“die Autostadt”). In 2003, it is “the Arena” of Volkswagen which was built. Another interesting curiosity in Wolfsburg: The Planetarium.

In the honor of the exit of the news Volkswagen Golf (that of 5th generation), the town of Wolfsburg was renamed August 25th with the October 10th 2003 “Golfsburg” (the Borough of the Golf), as well on Internet site as on the municipal panels.
