Wolfgang Schmidt

Wolfgang Schmidt , born the January 16th 1954 with Berlin, is old a German Athlète , which practiced mainly the Throwing the discus. Its weight of form was then of 115 kg for a size of 1.99 Mr. It took part in the Olympic Games of summer of 1976 with Montreal under the colors of East Germany, gaining the money medal there. It still gained several medals, of which a title, on the European scene. Wolfgang Schmidt made the headlines of the press in 1982 with an attempt failed at passage the West then his emigration in FR of Germany. He gained the bronze medal of the championships of Europe of 1990 for FRG.

Escape of GDR

After one (for him disappointing) fourth place with the Olympic Games of summer of 1980 and a qualification missed for the world cup of the nations of 1981 with Rome following a second place behind Armin Lemma, Wolfgang Schmidt decided to try his chance in West Germany. Like member of the club of the police force (SV Dynamo) with the row of lieutenant in the Volkspolizei, it was supervised by the Stasi which discovered its plan of escape. In autumn 1982, he was condemned to one year and half of prison. One year later, it was released and had to become trainer in a club of Stasi. Wolfgang Schmidt deposited a request for departure to go to continue his sporting career elsewhere. At the end of 1987, it was authorized to emigrate in West Germany, too tardily to be qualified for the Olympic Games of summer of 1988 with Seoul. For the last international competition which saw to be opposed the West Germany to East Germany, there was a scandal, the Est-Allemand winner, Jürgen Schult refusing to tighten the hand which Wolfgang Schmidt tightened to him to congratulate it.

After the political scandal

In 1992, he became champion of Germany in front of Jürgen Schult. But as it had not taken share with the qualifying heats imposed for the Olympic Games of summer of 1992, it was not taken into account to belong to the German Olympic team. Its rival Schult became Olympic vice-champion there. Later, it was withdrawn with San Francisco and became there Stockbroker and consulting in companies.
