Wizards off the Coast

(also called WotC or Wizards) is a American editor of plays mainly based on the Heroic fantasy and the Science-fiction. In the beginning, editor of roleplays only, Wizards off the Coast popularized the kind of the " Card deck to collect " (JCC) with the very famous Magic: the assembly, appeared with the beginning of the year 1990. Currently, the company publishes roleplays, board games, card decks to be collected as well as books of héroic fantasy.

History

Wizards off the Coast was founded by Peter Adkison in 1990 in the periphery of Seattle and, is still installed today in Renton. Initially, the company published only roleplays like Ewerway, Talislanta… But its true fame was acquired only with the Gen Con of August 1993 when it presented a card deck to be collected created by Richard Garfield, Magic: the assembly. The progressive success of this play allowed the company to grow and to settle in its own buildings. Wizards off the Coast, moreover holder of the patent n°5662332 on the JCC in the United States, also published other card decks to be collected with success like Pokémon, and this during several years before Nintendo does not take again the license.

In 1997, Wizards off the Coast repurchases the company TSR and is then the distributer of Dungeons & Dragons then becomes a subsidiary company of the giant of the play Hasbro in 1999. Wizards off the Coast also had during several years a store chain: The Keeper Range. In December 2003, she announces the closing of the stores to concentrate on the manufacture of plays. The stores were closed at the time of the summer 2004.
