The Wittelsbach are a noble family of southernmost Germany, one of oldest and more powerful, which reigned in particular on the Bavaria and the Palatinat.
It is a princely family, resulting from Othon Ier de Scheyern, Count Palatine of Bavaria, purchaser of the castle of Wittelsbach in 1124. This family is in fact a branch of the house of Babenberg.
Wittelsbach receive Bavaria in 1180: the emperor Frederic I {{er}} Barberousse gives the Duché of Bavaria to the Count Palatine Otton II '' Large the ''. They will reign on this State during 738 years (until in 1918).
In 1648, they receive electoral dignity and annex Haut-Palatinat.
The December 26th 1805, the duchy of Bavaria is transformed into kingdom, and the duke Maximilien IV of Bavaria becomes Maximilien Ier Joseph, king de Bavière. Its successors will reign on Bavaria, initially as independent kings then, as from 1871, as federate kings of the German Empire:
