With the moonlight
With the moonlight is a popular song, French and anonymity of the 18th century.
Words
- With the moonlight, my friend Pierrot
- Lends to me your feather, to write a mot.
- My candle died, I do not have more fire.
- Opens to me your door, for the love of god.
- Lends to me your feather, to write a mot.
-
With the moonlight, Pierrot answered
- I do not have a feather, I am in my bed.
- Goes to the neighbor, I believe that it is
- Because in its kitchen there, one beats the lighter.
- I do not have a feather, I am in my bed.
-
With the moonlight, pleasant Lubin
- Striking at the brown one, it answers suddenly
- “Which strikes kind? ”, he says in his turn
- “Open your door for God of Love”
- Striking at the brown one, it answers suddenly
-
With the moonlight, one sees there that a little
- One sought the feather, one sought fire
- While seeking of the kind I do not know that
- was found But I know that the door on them was closed.
- One sought the feather, one sought fire
Alternatives
It seems that in its original version this song said “Lends to me your lume rather” than “feather”. Lume comes from the word light and it is that which one needs to write when the candle died. One thus needs fire to relight the candle and to have thus light (lume). What leads until at the neighbor who beats lighter, i.e. which lights its fire, and which will be able to finally relight the candle. The song loses its direction with " plume".There exists much of different versions, some inserting even pieces of original melody or changing whole or part of the words (thus the versions of Charles Trenet or Colette Renard; the latter being disadvised with the children).
