With the castle of Argol

With the castle of Argol is a novel of Julien Gracq published in 1939.

Presentation

This novel is the first of Gracq, written during the year 1937. Initially presented to Gallimard, he is refused. Gracq (which adopts this pseudonym for the publication of the novel) then proposes it with the editor Jose Corti, who accepts it and publishes it in January 1939.

The novel, relatively short, concentrates on the ratios of three characters: Albert, Herminien and Heide. Albert having bought the mysterious castle of Argol, in Brittany, it receives there the visit of his best friend Herminien, who arrives accompanied by beautiful Heide. Between these three characters are woven reports/ratios of love and hatred which lead, on bottom of references to Parsifal , with the rape, then with died of Heide and the assassination of Herminien per Albert.

The novel is especially remarkable by the violence of the feelings presented (but seldom clarified) and by long descriptions of landscapes in harmony with the thoughts of the characters (thus the long scene of the bath, where the three characters swim towards the broad one beyond their forces as if they wanted to die).
