The cover

The famous photograph of the small pocket of the album was taken by Robert Freeman the August 22nd 1963 in the De luxe hotel Short Hotel, with Bournemouth in England. Freeman was already known to have worked on the first Calendrier Pirelli and to have photographed Nikita Khrouchtchev in the the Kremlin. But they were its photographs in black and white of the legend of the jazz John Coltrane which drew the attention of Beatles. Paul McCartney remembers:

Il put to us in a corridor of the hotel of the Short De luxe hotel: it was really different from the photographs that one was accustomed to making in the photographic studios. The corridor was very black and there was a window with the end. By using the strong source of the natural light coming from the right-hand side, it has creates this fabulous photograph. Some believe that all the preparation had to last of the hours and the hours. In fact, that took only one hour. He sat down, took photographs by-Ci by-there, and it was fini.

Robert Freeman itself remembers:

Il was necessary that the four Beatles hold in the square format of the 33 turns, then, instead of laying out them on line, I put Ringo in the corner lower right, because it was the last to have joined the group. It was also more petit.

The American edition of the album, Meet The Beatles! , used the same photograph on its small pocket.
