Genesis and recording
The song was especially written for Ringo Starr by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Ringo endorses there the role of “Billy Shears”, character introduced at the end of the preceding title, Sgt. Peppers' S Lonely Hearts Club Band , and member of the imaginary brass band of Sgt. Pepper. It was briefly named Bad Finger Boogie , which will be used as inspiration for the name of the group Badfinger. The objective of Lennon and McCartney was to create a song to be taken again in chorus. With has Little Help from My Friends plays on Sgt. Pepper' S Lonely Hearts Club Band the role which a few months before Yellow Subamrine had on Revolver .
The group had accepted that a journalist observes them composing. In fact, it is about Hunter Davies, official biographer of the group, which attended the genesis of this song. The song is a conversation between the singer and a group of people in “question/answer”. The three other Beatles sing certain lines and Starr answers them with the following line. The group recorded the song the same day as the catch of the stereotype of the cover of the album Sgt. Pepper . According to Hunter Davies, at the time of the writing of the song, Lennon and McCartney did not hesitate, when they were blocked on one of the passages of the song, to have fun by taking again some old standards of the rock'n'roll and even Can' T Buy Coils Me , before going back to work. A meeting of recording for the song was envisaged the evening that they began the song. They thus finished the words at the last time with the Studios Abbey Road.
Lennon and McCartney voluntarily chose a vocal register restricted not to force the voice of Starr, except for the last note which was worked by Paul McCartney with Starr so that this one manages to sing it. Did the beater insist to change the first line which was initially “ What would you C yew I blood out off tune? Would you throw scraper tomatoes At me? ” (“Which would you make if I sang false? Would you throw me ripe tomatos? ”) with an aim of avoiding tomato jets at the time of the concerts - Beatles still had in memory the scenes of collective hysteria in their concerts, during which the unchained fans launched kilos to them of “”, a kind of delicacy, of which they had had misfortune to say somewhat front in an interview that they was their delicacy preferred… Did the continuation of the sentence thus become “ Would you stand up and walk out one me? ” (“Te would you raise to leave me on the spot? ”).
Composition
The song starts with the acclamations of crowd and a chorus which announces “Billy Shears! ”, then the song starts. Ringo sings the first verse where an involving base line supports the song, follow-up of the refrain that Ringo only sings, chorus appearing only with the last line. This is followed of another verse which this time takes the form of a song to answer, where Ringo raises a question and where the chorus answers him with another question, follow-up of the refrain where the chorus sings all the lines with Ringo. Then, the bridge where the chorus puts a question to which Ringo answers. After the bridge another verse in the same style follows, where Ringo answers the chorus, follow-up of the refrain. A second bridge connects, similar to the first. The refrain returns again and finishes the song. Ringo sings the last note with force while the chorus makes its last harmony.
