Wismar

Wismar is a Hanseatic city Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklembourg-Poméranie Western) in the north of the Germany, at the edge of the the Baltic, in ex-Germany of the East.

It counts 45.182 inhabitants (at December 31st, 2006).

The city accommodates a university of technology, economy and design.

Founded it in 1226, Wismar seems becomes, a few years later, member of the Hanse. The Traités of Westphalia (1648) which put an end to the Guerre Thirty Year old, place the city - which takes the name of Wisborg then - under Swedish sovereignty. In 1803, Wismar/Wisborg is, with the help of the payment of an important sum, yielded for one one hundred years duration to the Grand Duchy of Schwerin-Mecklembourg. In 1903, Sweden gives up its rights definitively on the city, which becomes again thus definitively German.
