  • These plays took place two years after those of 1992 with Albertville, the CIO having decided to alternate, every two years, plays of summer and plays of winter. They are thus the first not to take place the same year as plays of summer.
  • One minute of silence takes place during the opening ceremony in support for the town of Sarajevo, which accommodated the plays earlier ten years.
  • the Norwegian Johann Koss gains the tests of Speed skating over 1.500,5 000 and 10.000 meters by beating each time the record of world.
  • the Italy Manuela di Centa gains five medals in the five tests of Ski touring.
  • These plays were the occasion of an intense popular enthusiasm. A cordial public and expert accompanied the athletes during the various tests by the plays, and this in spite of the arctic cold (- 4°C on average).
  • At its address with the ceremony of the fence, Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic committee, denominé the Plays of Lillehammer “best Jeux of winter always”, a characterization which already hold to repeat with regard to Plays of winter. At its address with the opening ceremony, Samaranch recalled Sarajevo and its Winter Olympics of 1984, to time in the middle of the Guerres of Yugoslavia of 1991 to 1995, with a significant message: “Our message is stronger than ever: cease the combat. Cease the massacre. Leave your weapons. ” The composition of the team of the bobsleigh with four men of Bosnia-and-Hérzegovine was Croat, two Bosniens and Serb, reflecting the diversity of the country.
