Winter Olympics of 1992

The XVIes Winter Olympics were held in 1992 with Albertville, Savoy, France.

Organization

The candidature of Albertville for the Olympic Games had been made official on November 20th 1984.

The copresidents of the Steering Committee were Jean-Claude Killy, Olympic champion and Michel Barnier, president of the General advice of Savoy.

They are the last Winter Olympics to have taken place the same year as the Olympic Games of summer.

The fence and opening ceremonies, put in scene by the choreographer Philippe Decouflé, as 18 of the 57 tests took place with Albertville. The other tests took place in the ski stations close to Tarentaise and the Beaufortain: the Arcs, Courchevel, Ménuires, Méribel, Plagne, Pralognan-la-Vanoise, the Seizures, Tignes and Valley-in Isere. The Olympic village was located at Support-the-Baths and them centers of press with Moûtiers and Léchère.

Canadian 12 years gained a medal
the artistic ski, the speed skating on short track and female biathlon were the subject of tests for the first time.
the Norwegian skiers gained all the male tests of ski touring. Bjørn Dæhlie and Vegard Ulvang gained each one three gold medals.
the skater speed Bonnie Blair gained the tests of the 500 and the 1000 m; Gunda Niemann gained the two longest tests (3000 and 5000 m).
Toni Nieminen, 16 years, was the youngest winner of a test with the OJ of winter.
Mark Kirchner was the first biathlète to gain a medal in each of the three tests of biathlon.
the skier Petra Kronberger gained at the same time compound and the slalom.
Italian Alberto Tomba is the first skier to preserve his Olympic title in Alpine skiing. It gains gold in giant slalom, as in Calgary four years earlier. It also gains the money medal in slalom.
Kim Ki-hoon gained the gold medal in the two tests of speed skating on short track.
the German team is reunified for the first time since 1936.
the Croatia and the Slovenia take part for the first time like independent nations.
the Baltic States are of return: the Lithuania takes part for the first time since 1928, the Estonia and the Latvia for the first time since 1936.
Several of the countries which composed the the USSR (Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Ouzbékistan) take part together within the unified Team (EUN).

Edgar Grospiron is the 1st Olympic champion of ski of bumps. The test is for the 1st time at the OJ (except demonstration).
Fabrice Guy and Sylvain Guillaume signs one doubled French Scandinavian compound new.
the female relay of Biathlon made up of Corinne Niogret, Veronique Claudel and Anne Briand Bouthiaux, gains the gold medal over the test of 3x7,5 km.
Franck Piccard and Carole Merle obtains 2 money medals in Alpine skiing.
Paul and Isabelle Duchesnay gains the money medal of figure skating of dance on ice category. The Franco-Canadian couple, composed of the brother and the sister, had already been world champion the previous year.
